<p> The Academy employs over 8,000 employees, more than a half of whom are researchers with university degrees.</p>
<p>The primary mission of the CAS and its institutes is to conduct research in a broad spectrum of the natural, technical and social sciences and the humanities. This research, whether highly specialised or interdisciplinary in nature, aims to advance developments in scientific knowledge at the international level, while also taking into account the specific needs of both the Czech society and the national culture. Researchers of the Academy institutes also participate in education, particularly through doctoral study programmes for young researchers and by teaching at universities as well. The Academy also fosters collaboration with applied research and industry. The integration of the Czech science into the international context is being promoted by means of numerous joint international research projects and through the exchange of scientists with counterpart institutions abroad. The CAS is financed primarily from the state budget. </p>
<p>The CAS has also been assigned financial responsibility for 71 specialised Czech scientific societies associated with the Council of Scientific Societies.</p>

<p>Chemical research continues in the tradition of such distinguished Czech chemists as Rudolf Brdička, Jaroslav Heyrovský, František Šorm, and Otto Wichterle. In physical chemistry, theoretical as well as experimental, research is oriented toward the selected fields of chemical physics, electrochemistry, and catalysis. Inorganic chemistry is directed at the preparation and characterisation of new compounds and materials, such as boranes. Research in organic chemistry and biochemistry focuses on medicine, biology, and ecology, seeking to synthesise new potential medicaments, especially anti-virals. Macromolecular chemistry involves developing, preparing, and characterising new polymers for use in biomedicine, such as those for contact lenses and the separation of compounds. Analytical chemistry is also directed at separation techniques, but on a microscale in capillaries and in spectral methods. Thermodynamics and phase behaviour of fluids, dynamics of multiple phase reacting systems, homo- and heterogeneous catalysis, and modern separation methods are studied in the domain of chemical engineering science.</p>

<p>The aim of research in this section is to increase knowledge about processes in living organisms, from the molecular and cellular levels to the whole organism. Biophysical research is oriented toward studies of DNA – protein interaction and the effect of environmental factors on organisms. In molecular genetics and cell biology, signalling pathways which trigger target reactions and the responses of the target genes to these signals are investigated; special attention is paid to cell mechanisms of immune responses. Studies of microbial genomes and processes lead to modern technologies for preparing metabolites with defined biological effects. Research in mammalian and human physiology and pathophysiology is centered on cardiovascular physiology, neurosciences, physiology of reproduction, and embryology, aimed at creating theoretical bases of preventive medicine. In entomology, insects are studied both as common pests, but also as model objects, as in the case of the silk moth. Research in experimental botany is oriented toward genetics, physiology, and pathophysiology, as well as modern plant biotechnologies.</p>

<p>Research in this section is concentrated on interactions between organisms and environment, and also between organisms. Studies involve earth ecosystems, water ecosystems, and parasite-host systems. Investigations are carried out mostly on the territory of the Czech Republic, and contribute to the bio-ecological mapping of the country. Long-term observations focus on typical ecosystems in selected localities studied from the point of view of geobotany, hydrobiology, soil biology, chemistry and microbiology, and on the eutrophization of selected lakes and dams. Taxonomy of higher and lower plants, especially of algae, is investigated and the information is used by conservationists. The Institute of Botany oversees the care of Průhonice Park, an important part of Czech natural and cultural heritage.</p>

The Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established by Act No. 283/1992 Coll. as the Czech successor of the former Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. It is set up as a complex of 54 public research institutions.

<p><strong>The University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague is a natural centre of first-rate study and research in the area of chemistry in Czechia and is one of the country&#39;s largest educational and research institutions focused on technical chemistry, chemical and biochemical technologies, material and chemical engineering, food chemistry, and environmental studies.</strong></p>
<h3><strong>History</strong></h3>
<p>UCT Prague was founded in 1952 but its origins date back to 1807 when the first course in chemistry was delivered at Prague Polytechnic. Reorganization of the polytechnic in 1920 resulted in the transformation of the chemistry department into the School of Chemical Technology, one of the seven sections of the Czech Technical University.</p>
<p>A number of key figures of the history of chemistry relate to UCT Prague. Among them, three figures are renowned in their fields: Vladimir Prelog, Nobel Prize winner, Otto Wichterle, inventor of contact lenses, and Emil Votoček, author of the Czech chemical nomenclature.</p>
<p>Several presidents of the Czech Academy of Sciences – František Šorm, Rudolf Zahradník, and Jiří Drahoš – are connected with the school as well.</p>

UCT Prague is one of the country's largest educational and research institutions focused on technical chemistry, chemical and biochemical technologies, material and chemical engineering, food chemistry, and environmental studies.

The list does not cover the whole range of services.</h5><h4><strong>Measuring the quality of air as specified by Act No. 201/2012 Coll., Air Protection Act</strong></h4><p>We measure the concentrations of the following pollutants in the atmosphere, as listed in Act No. 201/2012 Coll., authorized by the Ministry of the Environment: nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, tropospheric ozone, benzene, solid particles PM10 and PM2.5, arsen, cadmium, nickel, lead and benzo[a]pyrene. Measuring other pollutants may be added.</p><p>We can use air quality measuring principles in other locations, for example in city parks. Air quality information may help you to plan, develop and maintain these important green spaces in cities.</p><h4><strong>Assessment of environmental contamination</strong></h4><p>We offer complex evaluation of environmental contamination at a specifical location, as well as individual elements of the environment. We use our own laboratories, equipped with top instruments, for taking environmental samples and their processing and preparation for chemical and toxicological analyses. Our lab then provides the resulting qualitative and quantitative determination from a wide range of organic and inorganic substances, including their trace and ultra-trace concentrations.</p><ul><li>Evaluation of <strong>air contamination</strong></li><li>Assessment of <strong>soil contamination</strong></li><li>Assessment of <strong>building materials, secondary materials and waste</strong></li><li>Assessment of <strong>water contamination</strong></li></ul><h4><strong>Measuring the emissions of vehicles in real traffic</strong></h4><p>Measuring the emissions of vehicles in real traffic contains: the continuous measuring of concentrations of gaseous emissions of O<sub>2</sub>, CO, CO<sub>2</sub>, HC and NO<sub>x</sub>, isokinetic sampling of solid particles, isokinetic sampling of gases, including unlimited pollutants, placed into containers for previously non-specified detailed laboratory analysis of gas emissions, sampling for two different driving regimes, measuring the flow of exhaust gases, measuring the pressure and temperature of exhaust gases. Everything is done using a devicce developed by the Transport Research Centre and the company SEKO spol. s r.o.</p><h4><strong>The issues of fuels and lubricants</strong></h4><ul><li>Specification of the interpretation of emission measuring results,</li><li>Substantiation of the anomalies in emission characteristics of vehicles,</li><li>Influence on the emission factors of vehicles,</li><li>Specification of inputs for emissions modelling (AP development scenario),</li><li>The impact of alternative fuels on the degradation of motor oil,</li><li>Analysis of the technical condition of vehicles based on motor oil.</li></ul><h4><strong>Traffic-caused emissions balance calculations</strong></h4><p>Our services involve balancing emissions of mobile sources from road traffic (including emissions of solid pollutants from abrasions and VOC emissions from evaporation from the fuel systems of petrol vehicles), railway, air and water traffic, as well as emissions from off-road sources (agricultural, forrest and construction vehicles, military vehicles, plant care etc.).</p><h4><strong>Modelling traffic emissions and the contribution of traffic to imission concentrations</strong></h4><p>The offer involves modelling the flow of emissions from traffic at a specific location and the creation of dispersion studies (modelling the contribution of traffic to the imission concentrations). The input for these modellings is a multi-modal traffic figure. If the client does not have a traffic model available, its creation may be a part of the offer.</p><h4><strong>Modelling the traffic imission concentrations (dispersion study)</strong></h4><p>We conduct the calculation of imission concentrations for both gaseous and solid pollutants from traffic in accordance with the SYMOS'97 directive. Primarily, when substances are evaluated, the limits of which are given by the Air Protection Act No. 201/2012 Coll. The informal workshop also provides an excellent opportunity for those interested in multidimensional chromatography to learn more about this unique analytical technique. Research topics include advancements in multidimensional chromatography technology and applications of this highly selective chromatographic approach.</strong></p>

<p>The first 9 editions of this workshop took place at <strong>Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Toronto</strong>, Canada. They were organized by <strong>Prof. Eric Reiner</strong>. The workshop developed from a small group of <strong>experts brainstorming about multidimensional chromatography challenges</strong> to a vast workshop allowing the sharing of important work and networking between experts and users in the field. </p>
<p><strong>The 10th workshop was held in Liege</strong>, Belgium at <strong>the University of Liege</strong>. For the first time, focus group discussions were held on major topics to discuss the major challenges in the field. <strong>The 11th workshop took place in Honolulu at Chaminade University</strong>. It was again an opportunity to discuss the upcoming developments in the field. </p>
<p><strong>The 12th and 13th workshops took place virtually</strong> due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These versions of the workshop were exciting because they incorporated the first poster sessions ever to take place. In 2021 and until present, <strong>two student poster awards</strong> were initiated in <a href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?instrumentationItems=2"><strong>Multidimensional GC</strong></a> and <a href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/library?instrumentationItems=39"><strong>Multidimensional LC</strong></a> sponsored by the ACS Subdivision of Chromatography and Separations Chemistry (SCSC), which continues to present. In 2022 only, a poster award was also given for Industry Research and Development by CerTech.</p>
<p><strong>The 14th MDCW in 2023</strong> was held in person <strong>in Liege</strong>, Belgium and incorporated a live stream option. Notable events in 2023 included the first in-person poster session and the first session held on ASTM method development for GCxGC methods.</p>
<p>The Multidimensional Chromatography Workshop has a reputation for incorporating new and exciting activities within the conference each year. <strong>The 15th MDCW</strong> will be no exception to that trend. We hope to see you in person <strong>in Los Angeles</strong> to celebrate our first ever West Coast version of the conference!</p>
