Česká konference hmotnostní spektrometrie (ČSHS)

<p><strong>Over the years, the conference took place in Hradec Králové (4×), Prague (3×), Olomouc (2×) and České Budějovice (1×). The invited speakers included leading figures of mass spectrometry such as Günter Allmaier, Frank Tureček, Dieter Gerlich, Miloš Novotný, James Bruce, Renato Zenobi, Michael Przybylski, Kevin Schug, Andrea Sinz, Helmut Schwarz, Magnus Palmblad, David Goodlett, Aleš Svatoš, Zdeněk Lánský, Karel Lemr, Michal Holčapek and Vladimír Havlíček.</strong></p>
<p>Since the very beginning, the Czech mass spectrometry conference put a lot of emphasis on the active participation of <strong>graduate students</strong> and <strong>postdocs</strong>. The conference is a unique opportunity for <strong>young mass spectrometry scientists</strong> from Czechia and Slovakia to present at a local event, but in an international format and in front of wider Central European audience.</p>
<p>In 2022, <strong>the 10th Czech mass spectrometry conference</strong> is co-organized together with <strong>the 16th Central and Eastern European Proteomic Conference</strong>. The joint meeting gives our modest scientific event broader international exposure and diverse European attendance. We trust that the next ten years will bring even more development and expansion and that <strong>the conference will establish itself as regional meeting in the field</strong>.</p>

Czech Mass Spectrometry Conferences (CSMS)

The relatively new tradition of the Czech mass spectrometry conferences was established only in 2011, the very first event took place in Hradec Králové. Since then, the conference was organized every year except for 2020, the year of the pandemic.

Complex Chemical Composition Analysis Lab (C³AL)

<p><strong>We are a research group in the <a href="https://www.calstatela.edu/nss/chemistry">Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry</a> at <a href="https://www.calstatela.edu/">California State University, Los Angeles</a>. Our research revolves around the characterization of complex chemical mixtures via state-of-the-art techniques, inlcuding two-dimensional gas chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Our ultimate objective is to gain a fundamental understanding of how the chemical composition influences the properties of complex chemical mixtures at the molecular level. Additionally, we specialize in the analysis of microplastics, which is an emerging field with important environmental implications. Through our work, we strive to make a positive impact on society by contributing to the development of sustainable solutions.</strong></p>

<h5><strong>Detailed Analysis of Complex Chemical Mixtures</strong></h5>
<p>Complex chemical mixtures (e.g., fuels, environmental air, human breath, pharmaceuticals) are combinations of hundreds or thousands of chemicals, of which the composition is qualitatively and quantitatively not fully known. We use comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) techniques for quantitative and qualitative (targeted and untargeted) analyses of various gas, liquid, and solid samples.</p>

<h5><strong>Mapping Biodegradation of Subsurface Oil in Huntington Beach Sands</strong></h5>
<p>In October 2021, a failure occurred in a pipeline connecting the Port of Long Beach to an offshore oil platform resulting in ~140,000 gallons of post-production crude oil being washed up on local beaches. This project aims to study the interactions between beach sands and oil via GC×GC to understand the human health risks from oil-polluted beaches better. This project is funded by the California State University Council on Ocean Affairs, Science &amp; Technology (COAST).</p>
<h5><strong>Microplastics Analysis</strong></h5>
<p>Microplastics (MPs) are small plastic fragments that are defined as 5 mm in size and below. Due to their extremely small size, they exist in our food, water, and even the air we breathe. Our research aims to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze organic compounds adsorbed on the MPs surfaces via GC-TOFMS and GC×GC-TOFMS using SPME fibers and pyrolysis autosampler. Since MPs are virtually undegradable, understanding the types of compounds adsorbed onto their surfaces will provide a deeper understanding of the toxicity of MPs.</p>

<p>In forensic science, determining the age of a fingerprint remains an elusive problem. Fingerprint residues represent a complex mixture of chemical components, including amino acids, saturated fatty acids, triglycerols, cholesterol, and squalene. We use GC-TOFMS and GCxGC-TOFMS to analyze these compounds.</p>
<h5><strong>Chemometrics</strong></h5>
<p>Data analysis is an important step for extracting information from chemical systems. Our main goal is to fundamentally understand and describe how the chemical composition influences the properties of complex chemical mixtures on a molecular level. Current projects include the description of the relationship between hydrocarbon mixtures&#39; chemical composition and their freezing points.</p>
<h5><strong>Chemical Conversion of Plastic Waste into Fuel</strong></h5>
<p>We collaborate with Dr. Nien-Hwa Linda Wang from Purdue University to improve her new chemical conversion process (hydrothermal processing). Dr. Wang&#39;s technology utilizes plastic wastes and converts them into useable chemicals, polymers, and liquid transportation fuels such as gasoline and diesel. We also collaborate with UCT Prague and analyze their products from pyrolysis of waste tires and plastic foils.</p>

<p><strong>The Department of Organic Chemistry within the Chemistry Section of the Faculty of Science of Charles University is engaged in teaching and scientific research in the fields of synthetic organic chemistry focused on catalysis, bioorganic and medicinal chemistry, materials chemistry and electrochemistry.</strong></p>

<p>While <strong>studying</strong> in our department <strong>you will learn the basics of organic synthesis</strong>, which is an important skill for any chemist and hard to catch up on during further study or practice. Even if you change majors in the future, basic synthetic experience is important for a general overview and perspective of chemistry. </p>
<p>In addition to synthesis and its application to various fields of organic chemistry (catalysis, organocatalysis, bioorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, materials synthesis, synthetic electrochemistry), we offer a focus toward interdisciplinary collaboration, where you can learn some of the most important analytical methods - gas and liquid chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectrometry - as you investigate new organic reactions.</p>

<p>The Department of Organic Chemistry of the Faculty of Science of the Charles University is involved in teaching in three types of study programmes, both in the form of full-time and combined. <p><strong>The Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies and Innovations of the Technical University of Liberec, also known as CXI TUL, was founded in 2009. Our mission is to support TUL's long-term vision of collaboration with industry and innovation. We focus on three main research areas: nanomaterials in life sciences, competitive engineering and systems integration.</strong></p><p>CXI TUL prides itself on its applied research, which often takes place in close <strong>collaboration with industrial partners</strong>. <p>It is part of the CEITEC Centre of Scientific Excellence. Since 2011, it has been a key part of a top research infrastructure with unique equipment and conditions for basic and applied research in the field of advanced nanotechnologies and advanced materials and cybernetics.</p>
<p>There are a total of three areas of research at CEITEC BUT. Our main priorities include not only international research cooperation, but also its interdisciplinary nature. CEITEC Nano shared laboratories operate in an open access mode and provide ideal conditions for solving multidisciplinary issues, as their equipment can also be used by external users, institutions or industry partners. The head of CEITEC BUT is prof. Radimír Vrba.</p>
<p>The 18 research groups currently involved deal with ceramic, advanced polymer, bioelectric, low-dimensional or epitaxial materials, as well as biomaterials. Within the development of new materials, we also have research groups interested in materials characterization and advanced instrumentation per se, and even the development of advanced coatings directly for industry. Researchers at CEITEC BUT are working on the preparation and characterization of nanostructures, molecular nanostructures, nanomagnetism and spintronics or magneto-optical ThZ spectroscopy. <p>The activities of CEITEC IPM are focused on the interdisciplinary field of materials science. The focus of its activity lies mainly in basic research of metallic materials. The institute focuses on the physical nature of processes occurring in metallic materials during creep, fatigue and the interaction of creep with fatigue and other types of mechanical loading and on research of the structure and selected physical properties of materials. In both these research areas, the aim is to clarify the relationship between the behaviour and properties of materials and their structural and microstructural characteristics.</p>

<p>The Research Institute of Veterinary Medicine was founded in 1955 by decision of the Minister of Agriculture as an institute of the then Czechoslovak Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It is the only professional research institute in the Czech Republic focused on research in the field of veterinary medicine with a significant share of applied research. However, its focus also covers a wide area of preclinical veterinary medicine with intersection into human medicine, ecology and other fields.</p>
