<p>The Faculty of Science was established in 1920 as the fifth faculty of Charles University. It currently has <a href="https://www.natur.cuni.cz/eng/about-the-faculty/organizational-structure"><strong>29 departments</strong></a>, <a href="https://www.natur.cuni.cz/eng/museums-and-collections"><strong>3 museums</strong></a> and a large <a href="https://bz-uk.cz/en"><strong>Botanical Garden</strong></a> where the Study Department and some students’ facilities are located.</p>
<p>Nowadays the faculty is academically and organizationally divided into <strong>four sections: biological, geographical, geological and chemical</strong>. In addition to these sections the faculty has several specialized teaching and research centres, including interdisciplinary institutions such as the Institute for Environmental Studies. All parts of the faculty are active in both teaching and research.</p>
<p>The main mission of the Faculty of Science is to create highly qualified experts in biology, chemistry, geography, geology and in other interdisciplinary fields. Its scientific and research effort aims to solve key problems concerned with the development of human society. Some of the priority long-term subjects are human health, the study of the function and prediction of the development of ecosystems and the biosphere, and the development of environmentally-friendly materials based on the utilization of renewable resources.</p>
<p>The Faculty of Science offers <strong>three educational levels, bachelor, master and doctoral</strong>. All bachelor and master programs include both theoretical teaching and practical exercises in laboratories, and some courses combine the academic studies of natural science with teacher training in a chosen field. Bachelor courses are introductions to deeper studies that follow on in the master’s programs. Master’s study programs train experts for scientific and research institutes, government careers, industry and the private sector. Graduates of the master’s courses with the teacher training element are qualified to teach in secondary schools and secondary vocational schools. Doctoral study programs train highly specialized staff for science and research activities.</p>

SSJMM: ESAS (European Symposium on Analytical Spectrometry)

<h4><strong>European Symposium on Analytical Spectrometry (ESAS) and the 17th Czech-Slovak Spectroscopic Conference (CSSC)</strong></h4>
<p>is the international joint scientific meeting to share recent developments, exchange ideas, explore new directions and initiate a possible collaboration in the analytical spectrometry area. Leading scientists and researchers will be invited to present their most up-to-date results at this conference, to exchange exciting ideas and experiences as well as look into future development. The aim of <strong>this joint meeting</strong> is to bring together experts from universities, academia, official centers, various laboratories, and industry on a world-wide scale, to summarize the current progress in various areas of spectroscopy and the trends in the applications such as chemical, environmental, geological, biological, food, pharmaceutical and industrial materials and to stimulate contacts and mutual exchange of experiences and ideas.</p>
<p>In the last few years, atomic spectrometry methods have become part of complex analytical tools that go beyond the traditional concept of elemental analysis. This trend has been triggered in recent decades by speciation analysis, based on a combination of separation methods and spectrometric detection systems. It is now becoming common to combine several spectrometric and microscopic methods for imaging purposes such as multimodal imaging. Thus, it is practically impossible to develop, apply and describe one method in isolation, without reference to other information of molecular spectrometry methods, be it mass spectrometry, fluorescence microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and others. From this point of view, it still makes no sense to define the spectroscopic conference as a symposium of atomic spectrometry. That is why we changed <strong>the European Symposium on Atomic Spectrometry to the European Symposium on Analytical Spectrometry</strong> this year. The organizers believe that the ESAS conceived in this way is both compatible with the Czech-Slovak Spectroscopic Conference and will expand the possibilities of participation of spectroscopists who deal with both atomic and molecular spectrometry methods and their combination.</p>

<h4><strong>History and Tradition</strong></h4>
<p><strong>European Symposium on Atomic Spectrometry (ESAS)</strong> was launched in September 2008 in Weimar, Germany, by merging two important scientific events with a long tradition in the field of atomic spectrometry, namely:</p>

<p><strong>The ISSC</strong> was established in 1984 in Wetzlar, Germany, and continued as a biennial event in Europe. The EFS originated in September 1994 in Warsaw, Poland, as the East European Furnace Symposium and since then it has taken place every two years as The European Furnace Symposium together with the ISSC:</p>
<p><strong>The 17th Czech - Slovak Spectroscopic Conference (17th CSSC)</strong> is a proceeding based on a long-term scientific cooperation between Ioannes Marcus Marci Spectroscopic Society and The Slovak Spectroscopic Society. The meetings organized by the former Czechoslovak spectroscopic society (1949 – 1993) in the past and the continuation in the tradition of the national Slovak and Czech spectroscopic conferences now, since 2008, exist as a joint event.</p>

<p><strong>How did HUPO evolve?</strong></p>
<p>HUPO was launched on February 9, 2001. On that date, a global advisory council was officially formed that included leading global experts in the field of proteomics from the academic, government, and commercial sectors. Over the next 12 months, the council, in consultation with industry, identified major proteomics issues and initiatives that needed to be addressed by HUPO. Since its inception, HUPO has received substantial financial assistance from Genome Quebec, Montreal International, McGill University, the National Institutes of Health, and pharmaceutical companies, among others. In addition, it has benefited from considerable in-kind contributions of time and energy from HUPO Council members, research institutes, and pharmaceutical company partners around the world.</p>
<p>HUPO Initiatives are prominently showcased at each Annual HUPO World Congress, which are held as per a three year rotation in the Americas, Asia/Oceania and Europe. Past congresses have been held in cities such as Versailles, France (2002), Montreal, Canada (2003), Beijing, China (2004), Munich, Germany (2005). Long Beach, USA (2006), Seoul, Korea (2007), Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2008) and Toronto, Canada (2009). The number of participants and exhibitors has significantly increased over the years and the Congresses are a must attend for anyone involved in proteomics.</p>

<p>The International Symposium on Separation Sciences (ISSS) series started in 1990 in Bled (Slovenia) as the continuation of a series of local seminars and conferences held in Zagreb since 1967. The first six editions were alternatively organized in Slovenia and Croatia and the subsequent editions were held as annual international meetings in Central European Countries, under the auspicious of the <a href="https://cegss.ptchem.pl/"><strong>Central European Group for Separation Sciences (CEGSS)</strong></a>. The symposium traditionally offers an opportunity to scientist and practitioners of high-performance separation techniques, such as GS, HPLC and capillary electromigration techniques, to present and discuss the latest progresses related to all aspects of these separation techniques, their hyphenation to other separation methods or spectroscopic techniques, and their applications in scientific and industrial areas.</p>

<p><strong>Eurachem is a network of organisations in Europe, having the objective of establishing a system for the international traceability of chemical measurements and the promotion of good quality practices. It provides a forum for the discussion of common problems and for developing an informed and considered approach to both technical and policy issues.</strong></p><p>Full membership of Eurachem is open to countries within the European Union and the European Free Trade Association, the European Commission, European countries recognised by the EU and EFTA as accession states, and European countries having an Association Agreement with the European Union. <p><strong>The Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IOCB Prague) is a leading scientific institution in the Czech Republic, recognized internationally. <p><strong>Successful basic research and modern structure</strong></p>
<p>The quality of IOCB science is regularly and rigorously assessed by an international advisory board comprised of respected authorities from research institutes and universities around the world. IOCB has pioneered a progressive system of junior groups with talented scientists from different countries hired in an open international competition, during which they demonstrate their unique expertise and submit scientific proposals. Every five years, all research groups undergo a complex evaluation that strictly adheres to transparent rules based on scientific merit.</p>
<p><strong>Medicinal chemistry and drug development</strong></p>
<p>IOCB has always been active and successful in applied research and practical applications, particularly in medicinal chemistry. The tradition started in 1969 with an ointment called Dermazulen, which was followed by the development of several human peptide hormones and their analogues (lysin-vasopressin, oxytocin).</p>
<p>From a global perspective, the most significant contributions were acyclic nucleotide phosphonate antivirals (especially tenofovir as a component of Truvada, Atripla, and other anti-HIV and anti-HBV drugs) discovered by Prof. Antonín Holý at IOCB and later developed and marketed by Gilead Sciences, Inc.</p>
<p>Besides this well-known antiviral drug story, several other nucleoside compounds developed at IOCB became approved drugs. These include Decitabine, which is used in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia, Azacytidine, which targets myelodysplastic syndrome (both discovered by Holý’s peer Dr. Alois Pískala), and 9-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)adenine (DHPA), an acyclic nucleoside analogue discovered by Holý and used clinically in anti-herpes ointments.</p>
<p><strong>Gilead Sciences Research Centre at IOCB Prague</strong></p>

<p>The unique collaboration between IOCB Prague and Gilead Sciences, Inc. dates back to the 1990s. A partnership program called Gilead Sciences Research Centre at IOCB Prague was established in 2006 for an initial period of five years with an annual donation of $1.1 million to expand IOCB efforts in the field of human disease research. The program was renewed in 2011 and again in 2016 with increased annual funding of $1.35 million.</p>
