<p><strong>Gas chromatography headspace (GC/Headspace) is a technique used in analytical chemistry to analyze volatile compounds present in a sample. This technique is particularly useful for the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in various matrices, including:</strong></p>

<p><strong>The headspace is the gas phase</strong> that exists <strong>above a sample in a closed vessel</strong>. In GC headspace, a small portion of the headspace is extracted from the sample container and introduced into the GC system for analysis. The sample is heated to a specific temperature to facilitate the release of VOCs from the sample into the headspace part. The defined portion of headspace sample is then introduced into the GC system where the VOCs are separated on chromatography column and detected using various detection methods, such as <a href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?instrumentationItems=6-1">flame ionization detection (FID)</a> or <a href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?instrumentationItems=6-3"><strong>mass spectrometry (MS)</strong></a>.</p>
<p>GC headspace is particularly useful for the analysis of compounds:</p>
<ul>
<li>that have <strong>a high boiling point</strong></li>
<li>are <strong>thermally labile</strong></li>
<li>are <strong>present in low concentrations</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>The technique is also <strong>non-destructive</strong>, which means that the sample can be retained for further analysis.</p>
