The analytical setup includes dual GC columns (e.g., Zebron ZB-5MSplus for the first dimension and BPX50 for the second), high secondary flow rates (~25 mL/min), and electron ionization (EI) MS detection. Additional system components include optional FID detection, bleed line control, and ChromeSpace software for data processing . This configuration allows full analyte transfer into the MS, eliminating the need for flow splitting and potentially improving detection efficiency.</p><p>Experimental results demonstrate the applicability of this approach to complex mixtures, including a <strong>pesticide mixture containing over 200 compounds</strong> and real-world samples such as perfumes and fuels. The GC×GC-MS system produced detailed two-dimensional chromatograms with high spectral quality, enabling the correct identification of approximately 120 compounds despite relatively moderate spectral match factors . Identification and quantification of individual compounds in gasoline are critically important for refinery process control and product quality assurance. In this application news, we report compositional analysis of gasoline conforming to ASTM D6730 using the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=Nexis+GC-2030"><strong>Nexis GC-2030 gas chromatograph</strong></a>. Gasoline typically comprises over 100 hydrocarbons, making identification tasks highly complex; however, PONAsolution, a PONA/DHA analysissoftware,simplifies this process.</p><h4><strong>PONAsolution</strong></h4><p>PONAsolution Ver.6 provides retention index libraries for each relevant standard (ASTM D6730, D6729, D5134, D6733). Identification of n-alkanes automatically corrects the retention times of the remaining several hundred components, thus streamlining the identification process. When only a specific retention region requires adjustment, the two-point identification function is useful (Fig. 1). In the two-point identification procedure, reference and sample chromatograms are compared while assigning corresponding peaks. First, click on an identified component mark in the reference data (Fig. 1, a), then click the matching sample peak (Fig. 1, b). Repeat this for a second pair of peaks. The retention times of components between these two anchor points are then automatically corrected.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion</strong></h4><p>Compositional analysis of gasoline in accordance with ASTM D6730 was performed. The combination of SH PONA Tuning Column and SH-1 PONA main column enabled separation of compounds with closely spaced retention times. Moreover, use of PONAsolution software greatly simplifies complex identification tasks.</p><h3><strong>3. Thermo Fisher Scientific: Fiber optic probes add flexibility to Raman chemical analysis</strong></h3><ul><li>Technical note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/drx3_flex_tech_note_tn54708_bebb56b870.pdf"><strong>Full PDF for download</strong></a></li></ul><p>Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman Spectroscopy are non-destructive analytical techniques that rely on the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with molecular vibrations to provide information about the chemical composition and structure of a sample. Despite their similarities, there are some distinct differences between the two techniques. In principle, FTIR is based on the absorption of infrared radiation by molecules and measures changes in dipole moment during molecular vibrations. Raman spectroscopy, on the other hand, is based on the inelastic scattering of monochromatic light and measures changes in polarizability during molecular vibrations.&nbsp;</p><p>When applied to bulk chemical analysis, both FTIR and Raman spectroscopy can be used to analyze solids, liquids, and gases, but the nature of Raman spectroscopy lends some unique sampling advantages. Additionally, Raman often requires little to no sample preparation. Presented herein are application examples that highlight some of the sampling advantages of Raman spectroscopy. All the spectral data in this technical note were collected using a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/2238"><strong>Thermo Scientific™ DXR3 Flex Raman Spectrometer</strong></a> equipped with a fiber optic probe. (Fiber optics are readily available for Raman spectroscopy because of the use of visible and NIR light and do not require the exotic materials associated with FTIR fiber optics.) Preliminary tests for all samples were carried out using both 532 nm and 785 nm excitations, and it was determined that the 785 nm laser set gave an overall better balance between fluorescence and Raman scattering efficiency.</p><h4><strong>Summary&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>In this technical note, the analyses of a variety of samples by Raman spectroscopy are demonstrated. All samples were analyzed without sample preparation.&nbsp;</p><ul><li>Precise and localized analysis at the focal point of the Raman-exciting laser allows sampling through glass bottles, blister packaging and plastic containers, which eliminates possible cross contamination and analyst exposure to hazardous materials. The contributions from the packaging and containers depend on the type of container material, the container thickness, and the materials’ chemical compositional complexity, but these contributions can be readily subtracted out when needed.&nbsp;</li><li>Water is a weak Raman scatterer. Raman therefore has reduced water sensitivity, making it a preferred technique for aqueous solution analysis over FTIR. As demonstrated in the analysis of an energy drink, the Raman bands from water can be subtracted from the spectrum of the aqueous solution, leading to the identification of the components of the solution.&nbsp;</li><li>Raman spectroscopy is well suited for the analysis of inorganic materials, especially in identifying the crystal phases and polymorphs, as demonstrated by the analyses of minerals and pigments in a painting.&nbsp;</li><li>Fiber optic probes provide flexibility and ease of maneuverability. This is particularly advantageous when analyzing samples that are difficult to access or manipulate, such as large containers, geological samples and paintings</li></ul><p>The DXR3 Flex has multiple sampling options available. A properly configured fiber-optic probe is arguably the most versatile accessory for the analysis of bulk solids and liquids. The advantages, both from those inherent to Raman spectroscopy and those resulting from the use of fiber optic probe, provide opportunities for a wide variety of different applications when using the DXR3 Flex Raman Spectrometer.</p>

The concentration workflow combined rotary evaporation for bulk solvent reduction with nitrogen blowdown for final volume reduction to less than 1 mL, while carefully avoiding excessive temperature or complete dryness to minimize analyte loss. Oloy repeatedly stresses that improper concentration procedures are among the most common causes of analytical failure in PCB analysis.</p><p>For instrumental determination, the study utilized <strong>gas chromatography coupled with electron capture detection (GC-ECD)</strong> rather than LC-MS or GC-MS. According to Oloy, GC was preferred because PCBs are sufficiently volatile for gas chromatographic separation, while ECD provided superior sensitivity and selectivity for chlorinated compounds at environmentally relevant concentrations. <h5><strong>Is a gas generator environmentally friendly?</strong></h5>
<p>The production of H2 is via electrolysis of DI water. The process is a repeatable process, so once a generator is in the lab, there is no need for repeated deliveries of gas, meaning lower emissions from delivery trucks. If the supply of electricity is from renewable sources, the generator is a very environmentally friendly option.</p>
<h5><strong>What are the safety risks in using H2 instead of N2?</strong></h5>
<p>When supplied by a gas generator, the risks of H2 are minimised, so there should be little risk using H2 carrier for any GC or GC-MS analysis. N2 bulk supply (dewars and cylinders) also poses a risk to lab personnel, so should not be underestimated as a risk. Generators of any kind are a safer alternative to cylinders and bulk supply.</p>
<h5><strong>If hydrogen is 5 minutes faster than helium in the FAMEs analysis, could it be faster if we reduce column width/length?</strong></h5>
<p>Yes, reducing column width and length would be a way to improve separation and speed up analysis.</p>
<h5><strong>Do you know of any issues with helium supply to labs in Europe recently?</strong></h5>
<p>We have had reports from labs worldwide in regards to the current helium shortage, including customers in Europe. In areas where labs can obtain regular supply, the price of helium has risen starkly over the past few years.</p>
<h5><strong>Can we use H2 gas simultaneously for carrier and combustion in FID?</strong></h5>
<p>Yes, the supply from the generator can be connected to the ‘carrier’ and ‘H2 detector’ inlets on the GC by making a T-piece.</p>
<h5><strong>How many GCs can one generator supply? And how many GC-FID can a generator supply?</strong></h5>
<p>This will depend on the total carrier gas flow of the methods being run and how many FID detectors need gas. Peak have H2 generators producing up to 1200cc/min which can support multiple GCs and for larger labs, multiple generators can be cascaded to give multiple litres of H2 per minute.</p>
<h5><strong>Have you tried the DHA analysis using 100 Micron ID column?</strong></h5>
<p>We did not try using a small diameter column, but this would be an interesting option to speed up the analysis further. We would need to double-check the requirements of the ASTM method, in terms of recommended column to be sure whether this could be done.</p>
<h5><strong>What is the loss in sensitivity when you change from helium to hydrogen without any BG subtraction?</strong></h5>
<p>On an Agilent system, typically a 2-5x reduction in sensitivity is expected in full scan mode, although this will depend on the analyte.</p>
<h5><strong>Can you discuss the safety implications of using hydrogen? I.e. if there is a leak in the system into the oven etc</strong></h5>
<p>The risk of a leak into the GC oven is possible, but most leaks are seen at the inlet. If the inlet cannot maintain pressure, the GC would normally shut down and the generator would go into standby. If there was a leak at the detector end of the column, there is a risk that back pressure would allow the system to run as normal, so there is a small risk that in this situation, the LEL could be reached. All Peak H2 generators have a safety shut down if they supply H2 at maximum flow for 20 minutes, to prevent this from happening. Additionally, Peak offer an in-oven leak detector that can be connected to the generator to shut it down if a significant H2 concentration is detected in the GC oven. However, we have never heard of any customers without an H2 detector having any significant problems with a build-up of H2 in their GC.</p>
<h5><strong>Risk of H2 gas leakage in column oven. Hence, labs do not recommend use of H2 as carrier gas. Do you agree on this?</strong></h5>
<p>As mentioned in the previous response, there is a small, but very low risk of leaks causing a problem in the GC. Modern GCs are very sensitive to pressure and flow changes and can be equipped with in-oven detectors. Peak also offer a leak detector that can be connected to the generator.</p>
<h5><strong>Did you have any application with Shimadzu GCs?</strong></h5>
<p>Yes we have application notes with Shimadzu GCs on GC-MS applications. Please see <a href="https://www.peakscientific.com/discover/articles/gc-ms-ms-pcbanalysis-on-site-gas-generators/">here</a> as an example.</p>
<h5><strong>Are there any classes of chemical which tend to react with hydrogen when used with GCMS?</strong></h5>
<p>The key concern that most people have is reaction with Chlorinated solvents and the subsequent formation of HCl. This can be avoided by using pulsed pressure injection, which will reduce residence time of H2 in the GC inlet, where reactions are most likely to occur.</p>
<p><strong>Are there any classes of chemical which tend to react with the hydrogen when used with GCMS? We are particularly interested in aromatic VOCs.</strong></p>
<p>We are not aware of any specific classes of compounds where reactivity is a problem. Terpenes have been cited as a risk, previously, but in testing at Peak we have not had any difficulty in analysing terpene samples.</p>

<p><strong>In GC mostly helium is used as the carrier gas. The challenge with helium is that it is expensive and will only become more expensive.  Also the supply is not secured which makes many labs look for alternatives. It is also possible to use nitrogen or hydrogen as the carrier gas. Big advantage of these gases is their low cost and secured availability. They can even be produced in the lab. Depending on the separations required it is possible to use nitrogen or hydrogen.</strong></p>

Kyle’s investigative research at Shimadzu has mainly focused on the implications of using hydrogen carrier gas as an alternative to helium, analytical food applications, and using Shimadzu’s Barrier Discharge Ionization Detector (BID) to conduct trace water analysis in a variety of sample matrices.</p>
