Introduction: Ion detection efficiency and fast response times are critical aspects of the ion detectors used in time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS). With modern advancements in ionization, ion optics, and ion transfer efficiency, TOFMS systems are capable of generating high ion flux onto the ion detectors. Having an ion detector that is capable of maintaining optimal performance over a long period of time while accepting high amounts of ion flux is a significant challenge in development of TOFMS instrumentation. Improvements in detector life will minimize maintenance costs and improve TOFMS user experience. A novel long-lifetime ion detector was developed in partnership with El Mul Technologies for use in LECO’s Pegasus® BTX GC and GCxGCTOFMS. The system was thoroughly evaluated for sensitivity and robustness, including longevity of the detector.
Conclusions: The Pegasus BTX GC(GCxGC)-TOFMS with a novel Long-Lifetime Ion Detector has demonstrated the following performance characteristics:

<li>Sub-2 fg IDL for GC-TOFMS and Sub-fg IDL for GCxGC-TOFMS </li>
<li>Linear dynamic range of 5 orders of magnitude in GC-TOFMS and 4 orders of magnitude in GCxGC-TOFMS</li>
<li>Robust operation: the detector bias remains consistent and BTX peak intensity remains consistent over long periods of time, even with large numbers of samples acquired and significant amounts of charge accumulation on the detector.</li>

<h5>Abstract</h5>
Purpose: To demonstrate the performance of the Thermo Scientifc HeSaverH2Safer kit for iConnect split-splitless (SSL) injection module for trace analysis of pesticides using H2 as a carrier gas as a safe and sustainable solution for laboratory operations.
Methods: In this study, hydrogen was used as a carrier gas for GC-MS/MS analysis of trace levels of pesticides in food. The GC was fitted with a new hydrogen safer split/splitless injector, with chromatographic separation performed on a TG-5 SIL MS(30 m × 0.25 mm, 0.25 μm) capillary GC column. The chromatographic conditions applied ensured critical pair separation was achieved. The GC-MS/MS system was equipped.
<h5>Conclusions</h5>
<ul>
<li>The use of the HeSaver-H2Safer technology allows for a safe and compliant use of hydrogen as an alternative carrier gas in GC/GC-MS applications without the need to install a hydrogen sensor and removes any risk of unwanted reactions with the sample in the hot SSL injector.</li>
<li>When used with hydrogen, the limited carrier gas consumption offered by the HeSaverH2Safer mode permits a very controlled system demand for hydrogen, making this solution ideal for laboratories working with hydrogen generators.</li>
<li>Migrating the GC-MS/MS method from helium to hydrogen requires an adaptation of method parameters to address (i.e., retention time shift and different fragmentation patterns).</li>
<li>97% of pesticides in baby food and 98% in honey showed a linear response in the concentration range 0.005–0.500 mg/kg and the relative standard deviation for N=5 repeats of each sample type at 0.01 mg/kg was equal or lower than 10% for 98% of the evaluated compounds with an advanced electron ionization (AEI) source to increase sensitivity for analyte detection. Quantification and assessment of critical regulatory requirements, such as linearity and sensitivity, were performed in a single software.</li>
</ul>

Introduction: The limited availability of helium has been a concern, leading to a growing interest in switching to alternative carrier gases like hydrogen. Hydrogen offers several advantages over helium1 , including faster run times and improved chromatographic resolution. Helium is commonly used as a carrier gas for analyzing nitrosamine impurities in pharmaceuticals. However, there are concerns that nitrosamines may react with hydrogen, forming unwanted byproducts. To ensure that using hydrogen as a carrier gas does not impact spectral quality, we evaluated its suitability for analyzing eight impurities:

<li>N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA),</li>
<li>N-nitrosomethylethylamine (NMEA),</li>
<li>N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA),</li>
<li>N-nitroso-ethylisopropylamine (NEIPA),</li>
<li>N-nitrosodiisopropylamine (NDIPA),</li>
<li>N-Nitrosodipropylamine (NDPA),</li>
<li>N-nitrosodi-n-butylamine (NDBA),</li>
<li>N-Nitrosopiperidine (NPIP).</li>

Hydrogen carrier gas was used with the 7000E and 7010 Series GC/TQ systems equipped with the HydroInert and HES ion sources respectively, assessing spectral quality, linearity, repeatability, recovery, and compliance with nitrosamine analysis regulations.
MassHunter 13 software suite provided the tools for data acquisition and processing to be performed under a unified compliance environment. OpenLab Electronic Content Management (ECM) XT includes native tools to facilitate compliance, including the ability to create users with affiliated permissions, the generation of audit trails, and remote data storage.
Conclusions:
<ul>
<li>The 7000E and 7010 Series GC/TQ systems equipped with the HydroInert and HES, respectively, exhibited exceptional performance in determining eight nitrosamine drug impurities in sartan drug products and substances using hydrogen carrier gas.</li>
<li>The method was validated at 30 ppb with acceptable recovery and long-term repeatability. </li>
<li>The 7010 Series GC/TQ system enabled a smooth switch between helium and hydrogen carrier gas without compromising the performance of the methods. </li>
<li>Both the HydroInert and the HES sources facilitated achieving the necessary detection limits for the tested impurities.</li>

Introduction: Essential oils are typically analyzed to determine their chemical composition contributing to flavor and quality as well as to evaluate their authenticity and identify adulterants. Essential oils are often complex samples with high number of volatile and semi-volatile components that include many isomers with highly similar spectra and close Retention Indices (RIs) when separated on a single column. Hence, a comprehensive GCxGC approach is preferable to achieve an appropriate chromatographic separation for this sample matrix. In this study we used comprehensive GCxGC coupled to a high-resolution accurate mass GC/MS to identify the essential oil components. Here we also investigate approaches for comparison of the complex GCxGC essential oil data.
Conclusions:

<li>Several comprehensive GCxGC configurations and method using the high-resolution GC/Q-TOF and RFM were developed and optimized using a diesel sample. </li>
<li>Essential oils were analyzed using the optimized GCxGC approach, and the workflows for compound identification and statistical analysis were evaluated.</li>

Introduction: Greenhouse gases are a major cause of climate change, and carbon dioxide, (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O) are considered the 3 primary greenhouse gases. Although CO₂ accounts for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions followed by CH₄, reducing CH₄ emissions is considered important because CH₄ has a warming effect that is more than twenty times greater than CO₂. At the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November 2021, over 100 countries joined the Global Methane Pledge, which pledges by 2030 to reduce global CH₄ emissions by 30 % compared to 2020 levels. The Greenhouse Gas Analyzer is a gas chromatography system that has been developed by Shimadzu in collaboration with the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) (Fig. 1). Measuring levels of CH₄, CO₂, and N₂O simultaneously in a single sample is difficult, but the Greenhouse Gas Analyzer has been designed to do this simultaneously, which reduces analytical errors and improves the sampling speed, giving researchers a valuable tool in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Goal: The aim of this study is to demonstrate the suitability of the Thermo Scientific™ TriPlus™ RSH SMART VOC Sample Prep Station for the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in drinking and surface water by using a fully automated sample preparation workflow.

<li>Static headspace is a convenient solventless extraction technique for volatiles in water with almost no sample preparation required. </li>
<li>Unattended operations of up to 210 samples can be achieved with the automated calibration dilution and ISTD addition workflows.</li>
<li>The automated addition of fresh reagent just before the incubation increases the stability of ISTD/surrogates mix, therefore improving the accuracy of the quantitation of target analytes during data reprocessing.</li>
<li>The TriPlus RSH SMART VOC Sample Prep Station ensures increased sample integrity for highly reliable quantitative analysis, and reduced errors or possible cross-contaminations, maximizing the productivity of the laboratory. Introduction: Ginger essential oil (ginger EO) derives from the rhizome of the plant and has been valued for centuries Zingiber officinale for its aromatic, medicinal, and culinary properties. With a rich history dating back to ancient China and India, ginger oil has been treasured for its versatile applications and therapeutic benefits. Ginger EO is renowned for its warming, spicy aroma and is commonly used in aromatherapy to alleviate nausea, improve digestion, and relieve muscle pain. In culinary applications, it adds depth and complexity to dishes, especially in Asian and Indian cuisines. Additionally, ginger oil is valued in skincare for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, promoting healthy skin and hair.
The chemical composition of ginger oil is complex, comprising various bioactive compounds such as gingerol, shogaol, and zingiberene. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis is commonly employed to assess the quality and purity of ginger oil, ensuring it meets industry standards and regulatory requirements. Differentiating essential oil grades is crucial for the perfumery, flavor, and food industries due to several reasons related to quality, consistency, safety, and overall product effectiveness. As an example, high quality EOs are often pure, unadulterated, and extracted using meticulous methods to preserve their natural properties, whil the low-quality ones may be diluted, adulterated, or extracted using less refined methods, potentially compromising their scent and taste profiles and therapeutic qualities.
In this context, perfumery industries often need to be able to assess EO quality parameters in a fast and reliable manner. This application note describes the conversion of a Helium-based method to a fast and reliable Hydrogen-based one using LECO&#39;s novel BTX GC-TOFMS instrument. This mass spectrometer offers a wide dynamic range and sensitivity at Pegasus low femtogram levels, allowing for the simultaneous detection of both abundant and trace components without losing any detail. Additionally, ChromaTOF Sync software was used to distinguish between different grades of ginger EO and identify ® markers for each of them.
Conclusions: This application note demonstrates how the BTX GC-TOFMS is an excellent solution for the rapid analysis of EOs Pegasus using H carrier gas. The results indicate that neither the chromatographic performance nor the mass spectral quality are 2 compromised by using H . A % reduction in runtime was achieved, leading to improved daily throughput. Additionally, 2 60 the Sync software tool effectively clustered the samples based on their origin and quality, enabling the ChromaTOF discovery of characteristic features that differentiate them. The output information received from Sync ChromaTOF allows for more informed usage of raw materials in creating new fragrances and enhances confidence in analyzing routine samples.

Larger laser spot size can provide representative results with a single measurement
Standard Raman microscopes are traditionally used to perform Raman measurements or Raman spectroelectrochemical experiments when they are coupled with electrochemical equipment. Raman spectra collected with confocal microscopes allows the characterization of very small areas. However, these instruments can exhibit several limitations. SPELEC RAMAN, a new generation of spectroscopic and spectroelectrochemical instruments, offers powerful and interesting features to overcome these issues. In this Application Note, a detailed comparison is made between the main features of a standard Raman instrument and the SPELEC RAMAN by analyzing the results obtained with both instruments.
CONCLUSION
SPELEC RAMAN exhibits a number of competitive advantages over standard Raman microscopes. For instance, the spot size of SPELEC RAMAN allows the characterization of a large area in a single experiment, obtaining representative results with only one measurement. The versatility of the Raman probe is demonstrated since it can be used with different cells. The portability as well as the simplicity of SPELEC RAMAN facilitate the performance of optical experiments. It also ensures the synchronization of electrochemical and optical signals in case Raman spectroelectrochemical measurements are carried out. In addition, DropView SPELEC software allows realtime acquisition of the data and the performance of operando measurements. The easy data treatment and analysis of the results is done using one-click tools.

Abstract
In this application note, the analysis of helium (He), nitrogen (N₂ ), argon (Ar), and hydrocarbon (HC) impurities in hydrogen (H₂ ) was demonstrated on an Agilent 8890 gas chromatography (GC) system using gas sampling valve injection, capillary column separation, and flame ionization/thermal conductivity detectors (FID/TCD). The system repeatability, sensitivity, and linearity were evaluated. The excellent test results demonstrated that the 8890 GC can provide accurate and precise analysis of the target analytes. In addition, this system can be applied to the quality control of fuel cell vehicles that used hydrogen, according to different regulations such as ISO 14687-2019 and GB/T 37244-2018.
Conclusion
In this application note, an Agilent 8890 GC configured with two gas valves, two types of detectors (FID/TCD), and three capillary PLOT columns, was applied to He, Ar, N₂, and HC impurity analysis in hydrogen. The system performance was evaluated using certified gas standards. The comprehensive assessment covered RT and response repeatability, linearity, quantitation accuracy, and method LODs. The area precision of all test compounds was better than 3.0% at the low concentration level. The LODs for He, Ar, N₂, and methane were 2.6, 0.6, 0.8, and 0.019 ppm, which were far below their quality limits in the ISO 14687-2019 and GB/T 37244-2018 standards. The quantitation accuracy was 92 to 116% across the calibration range. These excellent results demonstrate that the 8890 GC, together with the selected Agilent GC columns, can provide accurate, precise, and sensitive analysis of target components. The test system can reliably be used for the quality control of He, Ar, N₂, CH₄, and other HCs in FCV-grade hydrogen, according to ISO 14687-2019 and GB/T 37244-2018 requirements.

Introduction: Essential oils are extracts from plant materials that capture the plant&#39;s scent and flavors. They have a broad range of applications, as they can be both a finished product and an ingredient or intermediate in the creation of other products. Due to this versatility, the analysis of essential oils is an important area of research with a variety of analytical objectives. 
Because flavors and fragrances are composed of tens or hundreds of ingredients, characterization of these individual species can be challenging. It is not practical to use numerous standards for the identification and quantification of all the individual species. Instead, it is common to use a workflow where MS provides identification and FID provides relative area % quantification, often with separate injections for each.
Additionally, two one-dimensional chromatographic separations with different stationary phases are also often required to isolate the individual compounds due to the complexity of these samples. Here, we demonstrate a possible improvement to this workflow by using a GCxGC-TOFMS/FID instrument that provides reliable identification and relative quantitation in a single injection. GCxGC provides enhanced chromatographic separation of individual analytes, thus removing the requirement for two separate 1D analyses. Coupling this with dual MS and FID detection enables both identification via the FID in one single injection.
Conclusion: Harnessing the power of a TOFMS coupled with a GCxGC platform and an FID allowed us to not only determine the presence and amounts of targeted analytes, but also discover non-target analytes.
This platform, based on GCxGC-TOFMS/FID, can improve workflows in your industry.

Introduction: Kerosene, diesel, and other petroleum products are mixtures containing over 100 different hydrocarbons. The properties of petroleum products, such as ignitability and viscosity, depend on their composition and greatly affect physical properties like combustion. Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) offers high separation performance by utilizing two different columns, which provides more reliable compositional information for complex mixtures compared to one-dimensional chromatography. In this application, qualitative analysis of diesel fuel using a GC×GC system with GCMS-QP2050 that is capable of high-speed scanning (30,000 u/sec) was conducted. No less than 30,000 u/sec scanning speed improved the separation of peaks that are too close to each other and enabled accurate identification of compounds.
Conclusion: Diesel, a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, was measured using GC×GC-MS. Each component on the two-dimensional image showed characteristic distribution based on its molecular structure, allowing for intuitively understanding of the composition of diesel. Additionally, GC×GC-MS demonstrated Excellentseparation performance for components, enabling more reliable identification of components of diesel compared to 1D GC-MS. The high-speed scan of GCMS-QP2050 (30,000 u/sec) contributesto more precise qualification analysis.

Introduction: The electrolyte solution is a crucial part of a typical Lithium-ion battery, consisting of Li salts (e.g. LiPF6), and organic carbonates. Decomposition and formation of phosphorous-based and other organic products starts already at the production stage of the electrolyte. The formation of such molecules does not affect the electrolyte/battery quality negatively, as long as the quantity is low enough. On the contrary, several decomposition products have a positive effect on the formation of the so-called SEI surface (Solid Electrolyte Interface) on the LIB anodes, which is crucial for the battery functionality. Nevertheless, this is a continuous chemical process and the increasing amount of some of the decomposition products is a clear indicator of the progressive aging of the battery/electrolyte. This application is demonstrating the GCMS analysis of Trialkyl Phosphates as reaction products of carbonates and LiPF6 salt. The choice of this compounds as markers for electrochemical battery aging is due to the fact, that their formation is very slow and depends only on a few external parameters, allowing to investigate the electrochemical aging (charge/discharge) by a simple comparison of before/after analyte content.
Conclusion: The presented application demonstrated the suitability of GCMS to investigate the aging of the LIBs using phosphatebased degradation products. This investigation is based on SCAN measurements. Here, a SCAN/SIM mode would be beneficial offering the possibility to detect the main compounds (carbonated, additives) and the degradation products in one measurement. A further improvement would be a dedicated SIM method for the mentioned phosphates with the highest selectivity and sensitivity.

Abstract: Dithiocarbamate pesticides are commonly used to control fungal diseases in ornamental plants and crops, and for control of tea gray blight. The residue definition for dithiocarbamate pesticides is expressed as total dithiocarbamate, determined as mg CS₂/kg. Methods for analysis of CS₂ use extraction of the sample into an acidified stannous chloride solution with isooctane, where the dithiocarbamate residues are converted to CS₂, which is captured in isooctane and analyzed by GC/MS. This application note describes the analysis of dithiocarbamate residues in tea using an Agilent GC/MS/MS in both SIM and MRM modes. A limit of quantification of 10 ppb was achieved in tea samples. Linearity was established in matrix-matched standards with R2 &gt; 0.999 for the range from 5 to 100 ppb, with average recoveries &gt; 85% at the 10 ppb level of fortification.
Conclusion: Analysis of dithiocarbamate pesticides as CS₂, using isooctane as a sample preparation solvent, can lead to the combination of a relatively high boiling solvent with low boiling analytes. Hot spitless injections result in poor peak shapes for CS₂; better peak shapes can be obtained with cold injection in split mode. Further improvement in peak shapes can be achieved by using a multibaffled liner. Matrixmatched calibration standards ranging from 5 to 100 ppb were used to assess calibration performance, with linearity established at R² &gt; 0.999 in both SIM and MS/MS modes. The method was validated following the criteria specified in SANTE 11312/2021v2, with the ability to detect CS₂ peaks down to 5 ppb using Agilent 7000D, 7000E, and 7010C GC/MS/MS instruments. Implementing a backflush method in the GC/MS analysis of tea samples can significantly improve the separation of target analytes from complex matrix components, enhancing sensitivity and throughput. Repeatability tests showed RSDs consistently below 4.2% for injections at 10 ppb concentration, indicating high precision and repeatability

Abstract: Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are among the high production volume chemicals produced in the past that had wide application and exhibit significant persistence in the environment. DDT, for example, has a half-life in sediment of up to 15 years meaning that it may not be 90% degraded for 45 to 60 years.¹ Furthermore, they are associated with a number of negative health effects when bioaccumulated in humans and animals. These are among the reasons that nine of the initial 12 compounds addressed by the 2004 Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) belong to this compound class.² 
Due to the complexity of matrices, such as sediment and biota, encountered when monitoring the fate, transportand occurrence of these compounds, it is necessary to employ techniques with high sensitivity, specificity, and robustness for these studies. In the past this has required the use of complex sample extraction and clean-up combined with electron ionization (EI) and high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) using magnetic sector instrumentation. However, in recent years the performance of Gas Chromatography Atmospheric Pressure Ionization Tandem Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry (GC-APCI-MS/MS) has demonstrated equal or better performance than the classic technique.³ In this work the Atmospheric Pressure Gas Chromatography (APGC™) ionization source on a Xevo™ TQ-XS Tandem Quadrupole System was used with both helium (He) and nitrogen (N₂) carrier gas to analyze sediment and biota extracts for the presence of 39 OCPs. Performance characteristics and sample quantification results for APGC-MS/MS were compared with results for the same aliquots run using GC-EI-HRMS.
Conclusion: The GC-EI-HRMS reference method separations and runtime were matched on the APGC-MS/MS system with only minor modification to the He carrier gas flowrate. Scaling of the column dimensions for use with N₂ carrier gas effectively reproduced the reference method separations and total runtime which allows the use of the same acquisition and processing files across both configurations. The comparison between the APGC He and N₂ carrier gas data shows that sensitivity is also maintained within a factor of two times between the two carrier gases. Analysis of extracted samples of biota and sediment indicate good agreement between the APGC N₂ carrier gas method and the EI HRMS reference method values. These results demonstrate the feasibility of modernizing the traditional reference method with a technique that is more easily integrated into most labs and more accessible for most operators.

Introduction: Topical ointments are commonly used to treat diseases and skin conditions by introducing the active drug ingredient through the dermis. To ensure the safety of the product for consumers, the US FDA requires that these formulations undergo leachables studies to determine the presence of chemicals which may migrate into the product from the packaging materials. Topical ointments such as creams and gels often take the form of oil-in-water emulsions which presents a challenging matrix for these analyses. Since these emulsions cannot be analyzed directly, novel sample preparations must be developed. Even with improved sample preparation techniques, the resulting extracts can still be challenging for traditional GC-MS systems. In this collaborative study, two different sample preparation methods were employed to extract a group of five chemicals commonly found in metal packaging containers such as tubes and tins. Unspiked and blind spiked samples from extraction methods A and B were provided for analysis on LECO’s Pegasus® BTX GC-Time-of-Flight (TOF) MS system. The goal was to determine the ability of the system to effectively detect and identify these chemicals with a non-target approach by leveraging mass spectral deconvolution and a software tool (ChromaTOF® Sync) designed for the comparison of samples.
Conclusions
<ul>
<li>The Pegasus BTX GC-TOFMS successfully detected and identified all five spiked leachables in this non-target case study. Non-target analyses can be critically important for extractable and leachable studies to ensure drug product safety.</li>
<li>ChromaTOF Sync was used to successfully compare unspiked and blind-spiked ointment extracts to quickly find the leachable analytes which were present at significantly higher levels in the spikes. Automated deconvolution was crucial for uncovering the spiked analytes from the complex matrix interferences.</li>
<li>A brief demonstration of GCxGC separation power to improve the trace level identification of 9,10-anthracenedione in the presence of heavy matrix background was effectively demonstrated.</li>

An analysis approach using the Agilent 8697 headspace sampler with the Agilent 8860 GC system and flame ionization detector
Abstract: Accurately measuring N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) residue is crucial for ensuring appropriate control of electrode quality in lithium-ion battery manufacturing. This necessitates the extraction of residual NMP from battery electrodes for subsequent gas chromatography (GC) analysis. Two common extraction approaches include liquid extraction (LE) of NMP from electrodes and heated extraction through a headspace sampler. This application note describes an NMP analysis method using headspace-based extraction and GC analysis with a flame ionization detector (FID). Residual NMP analysis was then conducted on real electrode samples to compare the results between headspace sampling (HS) and LE techniques.
Conclusion: In this study, a method for analyzing residual NMP in electrodes was developed using the Agilent 8697 headspacesampler coupled with the Agilent 8860 GC system and FID. The method&#39;s investigation assessed the system&#39;s performance in terms of matrix-matched calibration, quantitation precision, detection limit, and system carryover. The HS approach demonstrated an excellent detection limit and quantitation precision for targeted NMP analysis. In the carryover test, no NMP was detected in the blank run immediately after analyzing a blank cathode spiked with 100 µg NMP. The comparison between HS and LE analytical methods showed that HS could accurately quantify NMP in anode samples. The recovery rate of NMP from cathodes using the HS technique was approximately 65 to 78% of that achieved by the LE-based method. Given its operational simplicity and quantitation precision, HS is suitable for the process control of an established electrodes manufacturing route, while LE is recommended for the development of manufacturing processes and troubleshooting electrode quality issues.

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is known as an organic solvent used in solvent-based slurries, and especially for quality control of the cathode, the residual amount of NMP in the cathode is examined during the drying process.In this application, a simple analysis method for residual NMP in the cathode of lithium-ion battery NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese ternary material) using GC-FID with headspace method is introduced. In addition, results of qualitative analysis of other solvents remaining in the NCM cathode using GC-MS and comparison of residual solvent amounts in five different cathodes with different drying processes are also presented.Summary: By using headspace GC-FID, it is possible to easily analyze residual NMP in the cathode and quantify residual solvents without the need for preprocessing. Additionally, with headspace GC-MS, qualitative analysis of residual organic solvents can also be performed.Using compact models such as Brevis GC-2050 or GCMS-QP2050 allows for minimization of experimental space and detailed analysis of solvent analysis for each drying process. This can be applied to quality control and research and development in the cathode manufacturing process.<h4>2. <style type="text/css"></style>Agilent Technologies: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_forensic_triple_quad_mrm_database_toxicological_5994_7594en_agilent_0dbf3ad769.pdf">A Forensic Triple Quadrupole GC/MS MRM Database for Forensic and Toxicological Workflows</a></h4><ul><li>application</li></ul>Abstract: Systematic toxicological analysis is crucial in forensic laboratories, requiring robust and reliable analytical methods. Gas chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC/TQ) is a versatile and widely used technique that provides uniform results across instruments and laboratories. The aim of this study was to establish a database of multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) transitions for toxicologically relevant compounds amenable to GC/MS. The resulting curated database includes 176 entries, including 154 unique compounds with up to 12 transitions per compound. The database allows for instantly building methods for targeted screening and confident quantitation of GC-amenable, forensic, and toxicologically relevant compounds.The database is available for download as a CSV file in Appendix 1 of this application note.Conclusion: The forensic toxicology database, with a curated set of 1,803 MRM transitions for 176 toxicologically relevant compounds, was successfully developed. The compounds included &nbsp;benzodiazepines, antidepressants, opioids, and drugs of abuse. The application of this MRM method to an authentic real-world sample showcased its ability to detect and quantitate toxicants at trace levels due to the high sensitivity and selectivity of the MS/MS approach. This approach addresses limitations when relying solely on full scan data acquisition mode.The developed MRM database can be used for simplified data acquisition method creation, providing a valuable resource for the development of screening and quantitation methods in forensic labs. The developed MRM curation workflow showed promise for continuous expansion, offering a uniform and practical approach for adding new chemicals to the database.<h4>3. <style type="text/css"></style>Agilent Technologies: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/te_hydroinert_ei_source_functionality_longevity_5994_7680en_agilent_991ba3a869.pdf">Optimizing HydroInert EI Source Functionality and Longevity</a></h4><ul><li>technical note</li></ul>Introduction: The benefits of hydrogen in gas chromatography (GC) are widely accepted, as it can be generated in the lab in a cost-effective manner, produces fast chromatography, and allows for higher sample throughput. Since hydrogen is a reactive gas, hydrogenation and dechlorination reactions can and do occur in the mass spectrometer electron ionization (EI) source. These reactions can make applying hydrogen carrier gas to many applications difficult. A specially designed extractor source for the Agilent Inert Plus GC/MSD and triple quadrupole GC/MS systems address these hydrogen-related issues and improves performance with hydrogen carrier gas. The Agilent HydroInert source (Figure 1) with H2 carrier gas retains mass spectral fidelity and can allow users to continue to use existing helium-based mass spectral libraries.When adopting hydrogen for GC/MS analysis, there are several factors to consider. First, hydrogen is a reactive gas, and it may potentially cause chemical reactions in the inlet, column, and sometimes the MS EI source, which can change analysis results. To address potential issues in the MS source while using hydrogen, the HydroInert source was used. Additional information can be found in the Agilent technical overview of the HydroInert source.1 Second, for GC/MS applications, hardware changes in the gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer are recommended when switching to hydrogen carrier gas. The Agilent Helium to Hydrogen Carrier Gas Conversion Guide2 describes in detail the steps for conversion from helium to hydrogen carrier gas. Lastly, it is recommended that when working with flammable or explosive gases, laboratories maintain proper safety in gas handling and use. Further information on the safe use of hydrogen can be found in the Agilent Hydrogen Safety Manual3 and Hydrogen Safety for the Agilent GC System Guide.4,5Conclusion: Agilent HydroInert source longevity is dependent on application and method conditions. However, by using some of the best practices highlighted above, the longevity of HydroInert parts can be prolonged. The HydroInert source cannot be mechanically or chemically cleaned, thus when source parts show reduced functionality, replacement of the recommended parts above is required to restore functionality. Method linearity, method detection limit (MDL), precision, and accuracy were assessed to evaluate method performance.Introduction: Analytical testing labs play a crucial role in monitoring surface, ground, and drinking water for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Common by-products in the processing of household and industrial products, VOCs can contaminate water sources, potentially harming the environment and public health. To safeguard against this, labs use the U.S. EPA Method 524.21 to test water for the presence of VOCs, including four trihalomethane disinfection by-products. This procedure utilizes Purge and Trap (P&amp;T) procedures to remove VOCs with high volatility and low water solubility from water samples, followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).Conclusion: The TRACE 1610 GC, the ISQ 7610 system, and the Tekmar Lumin P&amp;T with the AQUATek LVA autosampler system together offer benefits for executing U.S. EPA Method 524.2. The Tekmar Lumin P&amp;T concentrator enhances sample throughput through efficient trap cooling and moisture control, thus reducing peak interference and extending GC column life. The ISQ 7610 system’s VPI and ExtractaBrite ion source allow ionization source and analytical column replacement without venting the instrument, ensuring minimal downtime, and the XLXR™ detector offers extended linear dynamic range. The collective technology addresses routine VOC analysis challenges, ensuring robust sensitivity, maximized output, and consistent method compliance. The ISQ 7610 system equipped with the VPI coupled with the Tekmar Lumin P&amp;T and the AQUATek LVA autosampler exceeds all the requirements outlined in U.S. EPA Method 524.2 for analysis of VOCs in drinking water:<ul><li>Excellent linearity for all compounds was demonstrated with the %RSD of the calibration response factors passing all method requirements.</li><li>MDL and precision for seven 0.5 ppb standards showed no interference from excessive water and produced very reproducible results. The average MDL result for all 83 target compounds was 0.06 ppb with a precision of 4.06%.</li><li>The precision for n=31 samples over 189 injections displayed &lt;30% RSD accuracy for all compounds as the method requires. The average precision for all 83 target compounds and 2 surrogates gave a %RSD of 6.43% with an accuracy of 98% recovering the compounds. Individually, 4-bromofluorobenzene and 1,2-dichlorobenzene-d4 had a 7.68% RSD with an accuracy of 98% and 4.95% RSD and an accuracy of 95%, respectively, over 189 injections and almost four days of uninterrupted analysis.</li></ul><h4>2. The method used fully automated, solvent-free extraction and on-fiber derivatization. The aldehyde compounds were derivatized with the derivatization agent O-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl)hydroxylamine hydrochloride (PFBHA) using the on-fiber derivatization procedure. The derivatization agent was first adsorbed onto an Agilent 65 µm PDMS/DVB fiber. Next, the fiber was inserted into a 20 mL headspace vial containing a 2 mL beer sample with agitation at 60 °C for 30 minutes. Both extraction and derivatization procedures were automatically performed using the PAL3 autosampler. The method demonstrated excellent sensitivity, with detection limits of 0.0009 µg/L for hexanal, 0.52 µg/L for furfural, 0.015 µg/L for phenylacetaldehyde, and 0.003 µg/L for trans-2-nonenal. The limits of the quantification for the four compounds were 0.003, 1.72, 0.05, and 0.01&nbsp;µg/L, respectively. The four aldehydes were successfully quantified in four beer samples purchased from a supermarket. Good repeatability was demonstrated with RSD &lt; 4.9% based on three replicate injections of the four beer samples for all four&nbsp;aldehydes.ConclusionThis application note describes the quantitative analysis of four aldehydes (hexanal, furfural, phenylacetaldehyde, and trans-2-nonenal) responsible for off-flavors in beer using an Agilent 8890/5977C GC/MSD with a PAL3 (SPME) autosampler. The components most likely to contribute to the aroma of a sample tend to be volatile and semi-volatile analytes, and GC-MS is well-suited for this type of analysis. Complex samples are effectively separated into the individual analyte components with GC. Time-of-Flight (TOF) MS detection provides important information towards the identification of these potentially important components of the sample with full m/z range data that can be library searched and that is also optimal for deconvolution algorithms. The incorporation of olfactory (O) detection with this data is particularly helpful for connecting the identified features with their contributions to the overall aroma or flavor. This type of sensory directed analysis highlights regions of interest and leads to specific analytes of interest for a focused review of the data. This combination of tools can separate and identify analytes and then determine those that are most important for contributing to the sensory characteristics of the sample. A variety of samples were analyzed with this combination of tools, and the benefits of using the information together are highlighted.CONCLUSIONSIn this work, the combination of a GC separation with MS and O for detection provided a powerful and efficient analytical platform to isolate individual analytes, identify those isolated analytes, and connect them to their sensory impacts. The olfactory data allowed for sensory directed analysis. In each case, the GC separation and full m/z range TOFMS data were crucial for determining the identification of the feature responsible for the characteristic aroma. This collection of tools was demonstrated for the characterization of the most aroma impacting components of a nutmeg essential oil, the distinction of sensory differences in cilantro, and the determination of an off-odor in beer.

These compounds can cause adverse health effects, ranging from short-term irritation to long-term chronic conditions, depending on the concentration and duration of exposure.Regulatory authorities all over the world have established limits to control the maximum amount of VOCs in drinking water, groundwater, or surface water (e.g., Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) in the USA or the European Directive 2008/105/EC).2,3 Therefore, monitoring and analyzing VOCs in water play crucial roles in identifying and addressing potential contamination issues, guiding remediation efforts, and ensuring compliance with water quality regulations.4Common methods to analyze VOCs in water include headspace, purge and trap, solid-phase microextraction, and liquid-liquid extraction as possible sample preparation techniques employed to extract and concentrate VOCs before GC-MS analysis. Additionally, it is used as a stabilizer for carbon containing products in surfactants, plasticizers, dyes, and pharmaceuticals1). Some studies have demonstrated that damage to the nasal passages, respiratory tract and kidneys occurred in rodents exposed to epichlorohydrin. It has been observed that exposure to ECH induced a high nasal cancer response in rats, therefore, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified epichlorohydrin as a “probable” human carcinogen (Group B2).According Water Pollutants of Water Environment Conservation Act, the permissible discharge limits of ECH in water were 0.03 to 0.3 mg /L by the classified area. The test method for ECH analysis in water is "Epichlorohydrin-Solvent Extraction/Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (ES 04608.1)" as the official test method of water pollution.2)The ES 04608.1 was used to extraction method with a large volume of solvent, it caused high consumption of solvent and long time of preparation. To solve these disadvantages, analysis of ECH in water in this application was performed using HS-20 NX headspace sampler without sample pretreatment.This application demonstrates the validation of a method for analysis of ECH in water samples using HS-GC/MS (Fig. 1) to meet the demanded levels of ES 04608.1 in Korea.ConclusionsThis Application news demonstrated the use of a Shimadzu GCMS-QP2020 NX coupled HS-20 NX for measurement of ECH in water. The proposed analytical method was with good validation parameters, such as linearity, MDL, LOQ, accuracy and precision which was satisfied the criteria of standard method (ES 04608.1) in Korea.<h4>2. Sample preparation was done using QuEChERS extraction and a dispersive cleanup process followed by injection into GC/MS/MS through liquid injection. A limit of quantification (LOQ) of 10 ppb for both compounds was achieved in matrix. Average recoveries ranged from 75 to 86% for both compounds.IntroductionEtO is used to sterilize foods to eliminate insects and bacteria, such as salmonella. Ethylene chlorohydrin, or 2-CE, is a derivative produced by the reaction of EtO with chlorine ions present in foodstuff. Use of EtO is banned in the European Union (EU) due to its carcinogenic and toxic properties.Previously, methods for analysis of EtO (EtO and 2-CE) have been developed that include acidic conversion of EtO to 2-CE. These methods are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and require large quantities of harmful solvents. Due to the volatile nature of EtO, sample preparation is crucial. In December 2020, the EU Reference Laboratories (EURL) for Residues of Pesticides recommended a single-residue method for the analysis of EtO and 2-CE in sesame seeds using QuEChERS extraction followed by GC/MS/MS analysis. The method adopted in this work demonstrates the use of an automated liquid sampler for sample introduction to the 8890 GC system coupled with a 7010 GC/MS triple quadrupole mass spectrometry system.ConclusionAn accurate and rugged method was developed which meets the requirements of the EURL for a single-residue method that uses QuEChERS extraction followed by GC/MS/MS analysis for the analysis of EtO and 2-CE in flaxseed, cumin powder, and red chili powder. The LOQ of the method was demonstrated at 10 ng/g for all the tested matrices. Repeatable results are found for 6 successive replicates of matrix-based standards at 10 ng/g concentration levels for EtO and 2-CE. Excellent recoveries were obtained for both EtO and 2-CE in all tested matrices at 20 and 50 ng/g spiked concentration levels. Thus, this study demonstrates the usefulness of the developed method for the routine analysis of food samples for EtO and 2-CE at trace levels.<h4>3. Data review of thousands of data values in a single chromatographic run and checking compliance against quality control criteria such as the EC SANTE guidelines2 are some of the most time-consuming tasks in pesticides analysis.Therefore, it is essential that workflows cover a broad pesticides scope, are sensitive and robust, and are as productive and efficient as possible to achieve compliance with regulations while meeting business goals such as return on investment (ROI), sample turnaround times, and cost-per-sample targets.An innovative approachIn response to this challenge, new pre-configured “out of the box” pesticide workflows based on the latest Thermo Scientific™ GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS instruments and Chromeleon CDS 3 have been specifically designed for multi-class pesticides analysis.These solutions include the hardware, software, built-in instrument acquisition methods, and customizable data processing methods including view settings and report templates, along with details of sample extraction and consumables for fast implementation.This new approach, which enables the detection, identification, and quantitation of up to 700 pesticides by GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS, combines results in a unique software user interface to confirm the identity of residues quickly and accurately, especially those amenable by both techniques.This automated cross-confirmation increases confidence in the data by minimizing the risk of false positive and false negative results while increasing productivity by reducing the need for repeat sample injections when either the LC-MS/MS or GC-MS/MS analysis is subject to interference. PFAS encompass a large family of chemicals with varying physicochemical properties. These properties not only affect their toxicity and environmental fate, but also complicates chemical analysis.In this work, a Head-Space Solid Phase Microextraction-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (HS-SPME GCMS) analytical method was developed to analyze six classes of volatile PFAS in water. This HS-SPME method presents the advantage of simplifying sample extraction and handling for the analysis of volatile PFAS in water, hence, minimizing operational costs, potential errors, and risk of sample-cross contamination.ConclusionThis study demonstrated the use of a Shimadzu GC/MS-QP2020 NX single quadrupole instrument configured with the AOC-6000 Plus multifunctional autosampler and an automated head space solid phase microextraction unit for measurement of volatile PFAS compounds in water. Linear calibration curves were obtained for all compounds (R 2 ≥ 0.993 and RF %RSD &lt; 20 %). The HS-SPME GC/MS-QP2020 NX method demonstrated qualitative and quantitative capability of analyzing PFAS compounds.<h4>2. These compounds are regulated in drinking water, and laboratories follow regulations including U.S. EPA Method 524.2.1 A previous application note described U.S. EPA Method 524.2,2,3 which is the most common method for VOC water testing in the USA. U.S. EPA Method 524.4 is an updated method that allows for nitrogen to be used as the purge gas, thus reducing helium consumption, and is now being more widely used. Targeting 75 VOCs, this method differs by offering more method parameter flexibility but stricter quality control, including the stringent calculation of the minimum reporting level for evaluating calibration checks.Implementing U.S. EPA Method 524.4 can present multiple challenges for laboratories. Striking a balance between optimized method conditions and meeting the acceptance criteria, like detection limit requirements for various compound concentrations, is pivotal. Another major hurdle is managing the water matrix to minimize GC-MS system water introduction, which could lead to detrimental effects and delay sample reporting, thereby increasing public safety risks. Ultimately, maintaining consistency in test results to avoid sample reanalysis is crucial. Another factor for laboratories to consider is the fluctuating cost of helium, which is the analytical gas of choice for this analysis. Reducing the use of helium—a limited resource—will enable the laboratory to reduce operational costs and increase profitability.The following evaluation describes the use of the ISQ 7610 GC-MS system coupled with a TRACE 1610 GC with the Thermo Scientific™ HeSaver-H2Safer™ split/splitless injector and Teledyne LABS Tekmar Lumin P&amp;T concentrator paired with the AQUATek LVA autosampler for U.S. EPA Method 524.4.ConclusionThe combined solution of the TRACE 1610 GC coupled with the ISQ 7610 system and the Tekmar Lumin P&amp;T concentrator with the AQUATek LVA autosampler system successfully addresses the challenges of VOC analysis and provides a robust, sensitive solution needed for ensuring maximized sample throughput and regulatory method compliance for U.S. EPA Method 524.4.<ul><li>Excellent linearity for all compounds was demonstrated with the linear regression (r²≥0.995) of the calibration response factors passing all method requirements.</li><li>MDL and precision for seven 0.5 ppb standards showed no interference from excessive water and produced very reproducible results.</li><li>The precision for n=30 samples over 245 injections displayed &lt;30% RSD for all compounds as the method requires and an average recovery of 91%.</li><li>Utilizing HeSaver-H2Safer technology reduced helium consumption for the method by 4 times, which provides a significant cost savings.</li></ul><h4>3. For volatile, and semi-volatile compounds, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with electron ionization (EI) is typically used. Compounds are determined using scientific libraries; however, where compounds are not listed or where the sensitivity of EI-MS is not sufficient, the identification process becomes challenging.Here, we describe an E&amp;L screening experiment using gas chromatography and a quadrupole time of flight high-resolution mass spectrometer (QToF-HRMS) with atmospheric pressure gas chromatography (APGC) for soft ionization. GC-QToF MS with APGC as an orthogonal technique to LC-QToF-MS allowed for comprehensive compound coverage with increased sensitivity compared to typical EI techniques. Due to the soft ionization of APGC, the intact molecular ion is often present in the spectra. This combined with a data independent acquisition, MSE mode, utilizes full spectral acquisition of the accurate mass information of both precursor and fragment ions.This approach boosts confidence in component identifications when screening against an MS/MS library, while minimizing false positives. For instance, in the LC-QToF-MS there were just under 40 potential compounds matches in sample E48 after considering factors such as retention time match, mass accuracy below 3 ppm, and the presence of at least one fragment ion. A further 38 compound matches in sample E48 were tentatively identified using GC-QToF MS with APGC, with mass accuracy below 3 ppm, and the presence of at least one fragment ion.MSE data also aids in the structural elucidation of unknown substances by utilizing accurate mass and corresponding fragment ions, facilitating comprehensive characterization. This data increases confidence in identifications of components and assists with structural elucidation of unknowns to ultimately aid full characterization. For example an unknown with protonated m/z 284.2703 was tentatively identified as a N-(2-(1-piperazinyl)ethyl)decanamide (mass error 2.33 ppm) by the software.For the extractables analysis of nasal sprays the UNIFI application within the waters_connect platform provided SST benchmarking, screening against a library, summary plots to identify trends, filtering of AET levels, binary compare mode to isolate relevant unknowns, and a Discovery Tool for elucidation of unknowns.<h4>4. E&amp;Ls derived from elastomeric components may impact the stability and efficacy of small and large molecule drug products1, and therefore need to be characterized thoroughly. Exposure to some E&amp;L chemicals, such as phthalates and nitrosamines, even at low levels, may cause safety concerns.2 Chemicals derived from the elastomer manufacturing process typically include accelerators, activators, antioxidants, fillers, plasticizers (including phthalates), mold release agents, and other additives3 that may leach into the final product. Some additives present in elastomer packaging materials may also contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)4 and aliphatic hydrocarbons.GC/MS is a commonly used technique for analyzing volatile and semivolatile organic compounds in the E&amp;L space. This study demonstrates the capabilities of GC/MSD to identify GC-amenable compounds present in a solvent extract of a rubber gasket by leveraging chromatographic deconvolution in combination with retention index (RI)-based filtering. Adding a high-resolution accurate mass GC/Q-TOF into the E&amp;L workflow provided a higher number of identified chemicals. It also increased confidence in compound identification and enabled structure elucidation of unknown compounds.The study was performed in the Network Workstation configuration using Agilent OpenLab Electronic Content Management (ECM) XT as the data repository. This configuration enabled tools that facilitate compliance with various national and EU electronic record regulations, including audit trails, user authentication, role-based permission controls, and remote data storage.5ConclusionThe GC/MSD is an effective and accessible tool for the analysis of volatile and semivolatile compounds in complex E&amp;L extracts. The established workflow includes deconvolution and an RI-based library search with the data acquisition performed in a compliant environment.The high-resolution Agilent 7250 GC/Q-TOF enabled the identification of additional components with increased confidence, as well as structure elucidation of the unknown compounds.Furthermore, using the novel ultra-low bleed Agilent J&amp;W DB-5Q GC column resulted in a significant decrease in background, which helps in the identification of late-eluting compounds.

Because of the side effects of these OPs, in Korea, residual standards are also operated in the water quality environment field. In the past, solvent extraction was used as a pretreatment method for water quality testing, but this required excessive solvent use and complex extraction processes. Therefore, the simpler Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME)-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (ES 05501.5) method has been revised and published by the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) [1].This application news describes the suitability of OPs analysis using SPME automatic injection (AOC-6000 Plus) and GCMS-QP2020 NX for Diazinon, Parathion, Phenitrothion based on the Environmental Standards for drinking water pollution, and Phenthoate, EPN based on the Official test standards for environmental pollution.ConclusionThis application news is to analyze five types of OPs according to the Standard for Quality Test of Drinking Water. The suitability of the analysis was confirmed using Shimadzu AOC-6000 Plus and GCMS-QP2020 NX.All components showed good linearity with the R2 value of 0.998 or higher in the concentration (0.1-10) μg/mL range. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) column technology that lowers interfering column bleed ions and elevated bleed baselines, maintains peak shape for active compounds, and can withstand aggressive thermal cycling can greatly enhance the performance and productivity of GC/MS methods. This application note examines how column attributes like bleed, inertness, and thermal stability can further benefit the sensitivity and accuracy of an MS. This study illustrates achievable data parameters, like sensitivity limits at trace levels, retention time consistencies, and data accuracy for active semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs), when the Agilent 7010D triple quadrupole GC/MS (GC/TQ) system is used.IntroductionGovernmental regulatory authorities have established method and performance criteria for GC/MS measurement of SVOCs that are identified as pollutants in environmental and industrial matrices. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) method 8270, for example, contains a list of over 200 compounds, some of which can be susceptible to unwanted chemical activity in the instrument flow path, resulting in data quality degradation. If the performance criteria of method 8270 are not met, system maintenance is often needed, such as liner replacement followed by column trimming or replacement, resulting in unplanned instrument downtime.Monitoring of the DFTPP tuning standard, which contains 4,4'-DDT, pentachlorophenol, and benzidine, validates the suitability of the flow path and monitors when maintenance should be performed. The breakdown of 4,4'-DDT to 4,4'-DDE, and 4,4'-DDD, as well as the tailing factors of benzidine and pentachlorophenol, tests the flow path inertness, indicating the activity of susceptible acidic and basic analytes. GC columns contribute the largest surface area in the sample flow path and, therefore, are a critical factor in controlling interferences in the analytical path. Agilent Ultra Inert (UI) GC liners, along with an inert GC column phase, can improve the robustness of SVOCs analyses.1Stationary phases used in GC/MS analysis of SVOCs are typically comprised of liquid polymers with a polysiloxane backbone. When heat is applied to the column during routine use, the terminal end of the stationary phase polymer can bend back and attack itself; this is called "backbiting." Ring structures, which are thermodynamically stable, are liberated from the stationary phase, increasing background noise and raising the baseline; this can be problematic for low signal-to-noise (S/N) analytes. Peak integration can become less repeatable, lowering quantitation accuracy. In addition, the increase in freed ring structures—which fragment in the ion source—and analytes can cause spectral interference in extracted mass spectra and decrease the qualitative score of a library spectral hit. The Agilent J&amp;W HP-5Q and DB-5Q GC columns have an increased thermal stability at upper temperature limits, allowing for less spectral interference, lower levels of column bleed, and better data quality, especially for heavier analytes that may suffer from issues with lower S/N.2The new Agilent high-efficiency ion source (HES) 2.0, as seen in Figures 1 and 2, is equipped with a novel dipolar RF lens that redirects carrier gas and low mass ions by &gt; 95%. The deflected ions land on adjacent lenses and are pumped out before entering the mass analyzer, providing reduced noise and extended instrument robustness while maintaining sensitivity. A ramped RF amplitude versus mass is implemented to avoid spectrum tilt. The reduction of noise allows for a further increase of sensitivity to attogram-level detection limits. Built-in intelligence features such as SWARM autotune and early maintenance feedback further enhance instrument performance and diagnostic capabilities. The DB-5Q GC column and the HES 2.0 work in concert to increase the robustness of difficult analyses such as that of SVOCs.3,4ConclusionThis application note demonstrates that the Agilent J&amp;W DB-5Q GC column can exceed the performance requirements of EPA method 8270. Agilent Ultra Inert chemistry across the sample flow path will maintain peak symmetry of problematic analytes, leading to improved limits of detection and accurate integration. Ultralow-bleed chemistry stabilizes baselines and reduces interfering bleed ions. High-temperature stability allows for the repeated temperature cycling needed for high throughput methods, even when analyzing heavy, complex soil matrices. The matching selectivity of the J&amp;W DB-5Q compared to the Agilent J&amp;W DB-5ms UI allows for seamless adoption, including compatibility with existing retention time locking libraries. The analytical performance of the DB-5Q coupled with the upgraded Agilent HES 2.0 allows for optimal sensitivity, as well as the ability to perform targeted and nontargeted analyses in tandem.<h4>3. Supplements are the most popular botanical products sold over the counter in pharmacies, groceries and online stores, therefore, manufacturers must ensure that the raw materials are safe for consumption. Pesticides are chemicals used for crop protection against a variety of pests such as weeds, fungi, rodents, and insects. Because of their extensive use, pesticides can be found in the air, soil, water, and ultimately in the food chain. Despite their use being highly regulated, misuse of pesticides can lead to unwanted contamination of food or other plant-based consumer products, and have possible impacts on both human and environmental health.When analyzing pesticides, GC-MS/MS is employed to detect trace levels. Helium is the most common carrier gas used for gas chromatography thanks to its high chromatographic efficiency and inertness. Recent price rises in helium and supply issues caused by shortages have led GC manufacturers, researchers, and analysts to investigate possible mitigation options that entail either switching to alternative carrier gases or reducing the helium consumption. The Thermo Scientific™ HeSaver-H2Safer™ carrier gas saving technology 1 offers an innovative and smart approach to dramatically reduce carrier gas consumption, especially during GC operation. It consists of a modified SSL body connected to two gas lines: whereas an inexpensive gas (e.g., nitrogen or argon) is used for inlet pressurization, analyte vaporization and transfer to the analytical column, the selected carrier gas (e.g., helium or hydrogen) is used only to supply the chromatographic column for the separation process, with a limited maximum flow rate. When used with helium as carrier gas, the limited consumption helps to mitigate shortage issues while maintaining GC-MS performance without the need for instrument method re-optimization otherwise required in case of migration to a different carrier gas.In this analysis a Thermo Scientific™ TRACE ™ 1610 gas chromatograph equipped with two Thermo Scientific™ iConnect™ split/splitless injectors, one operating as a standard SSL and the other one upgraded to work in HeSaver-H2Safer mode using argon as pressurizing gas, was coupled to the Thermo Scientific™ TSQ™ 9610 triple quadrupole mass spectrometer and used to run a direct comparison to demonstrate consistency in the analytical results.
