Pairing a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) with GCxGC can offer better dynamic range, increased sensitivity, and lower cost to GCxGC applications, however, many MS instruments can not accept the high flow rate coming from flow-modulated GCxGC.</strong></p><p>In this study, a flow modulator was installed in a QMS system designed to accept high GC flow rates, and tested using perfume and pesticide applications. Results detailing the sensitivity and effectiveness of the QMS system with high GCxGC flow input will be discussed, as well as a comparison to thermal modulation results from the same system.</p><h3><strong>Video Transcription</strong></h3><p>Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) has become a powerful tool for resolving highly complex samples that cannot be adequately separated by conventional one-dimensional GC. The study aims to identify VOC biomarkers that distinguish microbial monocultures, cocultures, and growth media controls, providing insights into pathogen interactions and potential diagnostic markers.</p><p>To achieve this, the researchers combined solid-phase microextraction (SPME) sampling with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/37"><strong>GC×GC-TOFMS</strong></a>). This analytical platform offers high chromatographic resolution, rapid spectral acquisition rates of up to 500 spectra per second, and rich three-dimensional datasets containing chromatographic and mass spectral information. However, each chromatogram can contain more than one million data points, creating significant challenges for data processing and interpretation.</p><p>The core of the work focuses on tile-based feature selection methods implemented through the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/348"><strong>ChromaTOF Tile software</strong></a>. The primary approach, tile-based Fisher Ratio (F-ratio) analysis, identifies analytes that differ statistically between sample classes by comparing between-class and within-class variance. Using this strategy, the authors discovered 576 VOC features capable of differentiating growth media, <i>P. aeruginosa</i> monocultures, <i>A. fumigatus</i> monocultures, and cocultures. Additional pairwise statistical testing was then used to determine which specific classes were responsible for the observed differences. Representative VOCs characteristic of each class were identified, including heptanal for <i>P. aeruginosa</i>, 1-octen-3-ol for <i>A. fumigatus</i>, and several unique compounds associated with coculture conditions.</p><p>The presentation also addresses practical challenges associated with high-throughput experimentation, where replicate measurements may be limited by time, cost, or sample availability. To overcome these constraints, the team developed complementary tile-based coefficient of variation (CV) and fold-change (FC) approaches that can identify important analytes using as little as a single replicate per sample class. The authors conclude that selecting the appropriate feature-selection strategy—F-ratio, CV, or fold-change—depends on the experimental design and available data. Future work will focus on advanced analyte identification using chemometric tools such as PARAFAC, enabling deeper biological interpretation of microbial VOC signatures and their relevance to cystic fibrosis research.</p><h3><strong>3. In addition, with a standard micro-syringe for AOC, the plunger may become stiff during aspiration and dispensing of aqueoussolutions, which can degrade repeatability.&nbsp;</p><p>This article presents an example of alcohol determination in sanitizing ethanol using the Nexis GC-2060 equipped with a newly developed FID. The Nexis GC-2060 can be configured with a newly developed FID that has high sensitivity and excellent linearity. In addition, a special liner for aqueous solutions and an Xtra Life Microsyringe were used to achieve repeatable analysis.</p><h5><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=Nexis+GC-2060"><strong>Nexis GC-2060</strong></a><strong> and the Newly Developed FID</strong></h5><p>The Nexis GC-2060 is a gas chromatograph that combines world-class analytical performance with workflow optimization based on the latest technologies. Rapid oven heating and cooling shorten analysis cycle time and improve throughput. The GC-2060 can also be equipped with a newly developed FID (Fig. 1). This FID offers world-class sensitivity and improved linearity.</p><h4><strong>Conclusion&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>The alcohol concentration in a commercially available sanitizing gel was determined using the Nexis GC-2060 equipped with the newly developed FID. The results met the system suitability requirements of USP &lt;611&gt; Method IIb, confirming the effectiveness of the Nexis GC2060 equipped with the new FID, along with the special liner for aqueous solutions, and the Xtra Life Microsyringe for repeatable analysis of aqueoussamples</p></div></div></div></div></div></div></section>

<div><div container-id="cq-colctrl-lt0" comp-id="A1"><div><p><strong>High-performance plastics (polymers) are the backbone of modern aerospace, medical, analytical instrumentation, and energy technologies. Because they are designed to survive extreme heat and chemicals, they are notoriously difficult to break down and study. To build better materials and ensure they don’t fail, scientists need to understand their chemical composition including the additives and “building blocks” that give them their strength.</strong></p><p>This webinar demonstrates two specialized sample delivery techniques to characterize these materials without the need for elaborate sample preparation strategies:</p><ul><li><strong>Thermal Desorption: </strong>Controlled heating (up to 300 °C) of the plastic to release additives and potential contaminants.</li><li><strong>Pyrolysis: </strong>Using intense heat (greater than 600 °C) to break the plastic’s “backbone” into identifiable fragments.</li></ul><p>Combining these techniques with high-resolution GC-TOFMS enables detection of the complex chemical fingerprints for high-performance plastics like polyether ether ketone (PEEK, used in medical implants) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, commonly known as Teflon).</p><p>We will demonstrate a reliable method to analyze the chemistry of the world’s toughest plastics. <p><strong>Spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS), provides a powerful and non-destructive approach for identifying materials without opening packages or containers. However, measurement success depends strongly on sample characteristics, container materials, and testing conditions. This webinar presents an experience-based overview of what SORS-enabled Raman spectroscopy can and cannot reliably measure using the Agilent Vaya Raman spectrometer as a representative platform. We will discuss classes of materials that are Raman-inactive or weak, samples prone to fluorescence or low signal, and common container materials that interfere with or block Raman measurements. Practical guidance will be provided on container thickness, color, and composition, as well as when black shielding or ambient light control is required.
