AccuTOF GC series Applications Notebook

The text describes JEOL’s advanced AccuTOF GC series of gas chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometers, detailing both the fourth-generation JMS-T200GC “AccuTOF GCx” and the earlier JMS-T100GC “AccuTOF GC.” These instruments combine high sensitivity, high mass resolution (up to > 10,000 FWHM), and mass accuracy (< 1.5 mDa or < 4 ppm) with a wide mass range (m/z 4–6000) and fast spectral acquisition (up to 50 spectra/s). Key hardware innovations include: an ion‐transfer design that removes > 99% of carrier gas ions, a two‐stage orthogonal accelerator with reflectron for spatial and energy focusing, and a universal EI/FI/FD combination ion source with plug‐and‐socket chamber and isolation valve. The system’s software, msAxel, automates peak detection, exact-mass measurement, library searching and reporting. Performance benchmarks demonstrate GC/EI sensitivity of S/N > 300 for 1 pg OFN, FI detection of molecular ions at fg levels, mass resolution > 10,000, and limits of detection below 16 fg. Applications cover a broad range: direct analysis of refractory materials (polymers, pigments, ionic liquids, pharmaceuticals) via FD and FI; comprehensive two-dimensional (GC×GC) separations of complex hydrocarbon mixtures (petrochemicals, environmental pollutants, flavors and fragrances, pesticides) using fast acquisition rates; accurate-mass compound identification in unknown samples; and group-type and Kendrick mass defect analyses for oil characterization. A series of application notes illustrates the system’s unique ability to resolve isobaric interferences, extract high-resolution ion chromatograms, perform one-point exact-mass calibration, and seamlessly switch ionization modes without venting. This makes the AccuTOF GC series an extremely versatile and powerful tool for qualitative and quantitative analyses in research, quality control, and industrial analytics.
