Analysis of Carbamate Pesticides Using Agilent 6820 Gas Chromatograph/Nitrogen Phosphorus Detector
Applications | 2004 | Agilent TechnologiesInstrumentation
Carbamate pesticides are widely used to protect crops but can leave toxic residues in food products. Reliable trace analysis of these compounds is critical to ensure food safety, comply with regulatory limits, and protect public health.
This study evaluates the performance of the Agilent 6820 gas chromatograph coupled with a nitrogen phosphorus detector to separate and quantify seven common carbamate pesticides. The method follows China National Standard GB/T 5009.104-2003 and aims to demonstrate sensitivity, selectivity, and compliance with maximum residue limits.
Standards of metolcarb, isoprocarb, baycarb, propoxur, carbofuran, primicarb, and carbaryl were prepared in acetone and injected manually in splitless mode. A temperature program from 50 ºC up to 200 ºC ensured adequate separation on a 30 m × 0.32 mm × 0.25 µm HP-5ms capillary column. Calibration curves were generated over a 10–1000 ppb range to assess linearity and detection limits.
All seven carbamates were fully resolved, including structurally similar baycarb and propoxur (resolution 1.0). Calibration curves exhibited excellent linearity (R2 > 0.9969). Limits of detection ranged from 4 to 6 ppb with signal-to-noise ratios between 6 and 12 at 10 ppb, well below Chinese maximum residue limits (50 ppb for primicarb and 5000 ppb for carbaryl).
Advances may include automated sample preparation, coupling GC with mass spectrometry for confirmatory analysis, broader screening of diverse pesticide classes, and development of greener chromatographic phases to reduce environmental impact.
The Agilent 6820 GC/NPD system provides a robust, sensitive, and selective approach for quantifying carbamate pesticides at trace levels. The method meets regulatory requirements and is well suited for routine food safety testing.

Summary
Importance of the topic
Carbamate pesticides are widely used to protect crops but can leave toxic residues in food products. Reliable trace analysis of these compounds is critical to ensure food safety, comply with regulatory limits, and protect public health.
Objectives and overview of the study
This study evaluates the performance of the Agilent 6820 gas chromatograph coupled with a nitrogen phosphorus detector to separate and quantify seven common carbamate pesticides. The method follows China National Standard GB/T 5009.104-2003 and aims to demonstrate sensitivity, selectivity, and compliance with maximum residue limits.
Methodology
Standards of metolcarb, isoprocarb, baycarb, propoxur, carbofuran, primicarb, and carbaryl were prepared in acetone and injected manually in splitless mode. A temperature program from 50 ºC up to 200 ºC ensured adequate separation on a 30 m × 0.32 mm × 0.25 µm HP-5ms capillary column. Calibration curves were generated over a 10–1000 ppb range to assess linearity and detection limits.
Used instrumentation
- Gas chromatograph Agilent 6820 GC
- Nitrogen phosphorus detector operated at 325 ºC with white bead
- HP-5ms capillary column, 30 m × 0.32 mm × 0.25 µm
- Splitless inlet at 250 ºC
- Cerity Networked Data System for control and data acquisition
- Nitrogen carrier gas at 5 psi and makeup flow of 10 mL/min
- Hydrogen and air flows for detector support
Main results and discussion
All seven carbamates were fully resolved, including structurally similar baycarb and propoxur (resolution 1.0). Calibration curves exhibited excellent linearity (R2 > 0.9969). Limits of detection ranged from 4 to 6 ppb with signal-to-noise ratios between 6 and 12 at 10 ppb, well below Chinese maximum residue limits (50 ppb for primicarb and 5000 ppb for carbaryl).
Benefits and practical applications
- The method delivers high sensitivity and selectivity for routine monitoring of carbamate residues in food matrices
- Low detection limits ensure compliance with stringent regulatory standards
- Capillary column technology offers faster analysis and superior separation over packed columns
Future trends and potential applications
Advances may include automated sample preparation, coupling GC with mass spectrometry for confirmatory analysis, broader screening of diverse pesticide classes, and development of greener chromatographic phases to reduce environmental impact.
Conclusion
The Agilent 6820 GC/NPD system provides a robust, sensitive, and selective approach for quantifying carbamate pesticides at trace levels. The method meets regulatory requirements and is well suited for routine food safety testing.
