Significance of the Topic

Mass spectrometry (MS) stands as a cornerstone in modern analytical chemistry, enabling precise identification, quantification and structural characterization of molecules across diverse fields—from fundamental ion‐chemistry research to applications in biology, environment, food safety and clinical diagnostics. The 2nd Conference of the Czech Society for Mass Spectrometry (ČSHS), held in October 2012 in Hradec Králové, convened experts to share advancements in instrumentation, method development and novel applications.

Conference Objectives and Overview

The conference aimed to highlight recent breakthroughs in mass spectrometric techniques and their deployment in ion‐molecule chemistry, organic analysis, industrial and environmental monitoring, food and pharmaceutical QA/QC, as well as in proteomics, glycomics and metabolomics. The program featured keynote lectures, thematic oral sessions, industry workshops and poster presentations, fostering exchange between academia, industry and instrument manufacturers.

Methodologies and Instrumentation

Sessions showcased a spectrum of MS platforms: high‐resolution TOF and QTOF analyzers, triple quadrupoles (QqQ) for quantitative trace analysis, ion traps for MSn studies, and ion mobility for resolving isomeric species. Emerging ionization methods (ESI, MALDI, SIFT‐MS, DESI, APCI, APPI) were demonstrated in both targeted and non‐targeted workflows. Specialized techniques such as infrared multi‐photon dissociation, hydrogen/deuterium exchange (HDX), chemical cross‐linking, nano‐LC and chip‐based separations underpinned structure and reaction mechanism studies. Instruments from Waters, Agilent, Thermo Fisher, Bruker, Shimadzu and AB SCIEX were featured alongside local engineering of ambient interfaces and lab-built prototypes.

Main Results and Discussion Highlights

Key findings included: the use of metal and gas‐phase ion chemistry to elucidate peptide and carbohydrate reaction pathways; innovative cell membrane topology mapping via photo‐activated cross-linkers; atmospheric‐pressure MS for volatile biomarker screening in breath diagnostics; in situ phosphopeptide enrichment on modified MALDI targets; and advances in rapid MS imaging by mirror‐scan and droplet microfluidic coupling. Non‐targeted lipidomics and metabolomics approaches using HILIC-LC/MS and GC/MS revealed disease‐related signatures in clinical samples.

Benefits and Practical Applications

These methodological developments expand MS capabilities for low-abundance analytes, complex biological mixtures and real-time analysis, streamlining workflows in clinical screening, environmental monitoring and industrial QA/QC. Improved sensitivity, selectivity and throughput pave the way for non-invasive diagnostics, pollutant tracking, food safety and mechanistic insights in chemistry and biochemistry.

Future Trends and Potential Uses

Looking ahead, integration of ion mobility, ultrahigh‐resolution MS and advanced ionization interfaces will drive deeper molecular insights. Hyphenated microfluidic-MS platforms promise high‐throughput single-cell and droplet analysis. Machine learning and big data approaches will further enhance non-targeted screening and biomarker discovery. The growing synergy between instrumentation, software and sample prep will continue to broaden MS impact across science and industry.

Conclusion

The 2nd ČSHS conference underscored the dynamic evolution of mass spectrometry, bridging fundamental studies and practical applications. By uniting diverse techniques and disciplines, it charted a course toward more sensitive, rapid and comprehensive analyses that will address emerging challenges in healthcare, environmental protection and beyond.
