Introduction: Ion detection efficiency and fast response times are critical aspects of the ion detectors used in time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS). With modern advancements in ionization, ion optics, and ion transfer efficiency, TOFMS systems are capable of generating high ion flux onto the ion detectors. Having an ion detector that is capable of maintaining optimal performance over a long period of time while accepting high amounts of ion flux is a significant challenge in development of TOFMS instrumentation. Improvements in detector life will minimize maintenance costs and improve TOFMS user experience. A novel long-lifetime ion detector was developed in partnership with El Mul Technologies for use in LECO’s Pegasus® BTX GC and GCxGCTOFMS. The system was thoroughly evaluated for sensitivity and robustness, including longevity of the detector.
Conclusions: The Pegasus BTX GC(GCxGC)-TOFMS with a novel Long-Lifetime Ion Detector has demonstrated the following performance characteristics:

<li>Sub-2 fg IDL for GC-TOFMS and Sub-fg IDL for GCxGC-TOFMS </li>
<li>Linear dynamic range of 5 orders of magnitude in GC-TOFMS and 4 orders of magnitude in GCxGC-TOFMS</li>
<li>Robust operation: the detector bias remains consistent and BTX peak intensity remains consistent over long periods of time, even with large numbers of samples acquired and significant amounts of charge accumulation on the detector.</li>

<h5>Abstract</h5>
Purpose: To demonstrate the performance of the Thermo Scientifc HeSaverH2Safer kit for iConnect split-splitless (SSL) injection module for trace analysis of pesticides using H2 as a carrier gas as a safe and sustainable solution for laboratory operations.
Methods: In this study, hydrogen was used as a carrier gas for GC-MS/MS analysis of trace levels of pesticides in food. The GC was fitted with a new hydrogen safer split/splitless injector, with chromatographic separation performed on a TG-5 SIL MS(30 m × 0.25 mm, 0.25 μm) capillary GC column. The chromatographic conditions applied ensured critical pair separation was achieved. The GC-MS/MS system was equipped.
<h5>Conclusions</h5>
<ul>
<li>The use of the HeSaver-H2Safer technology allows for a safe and compliant use of hydrogen as an alternative carrier gas in GC/GC-MS applications without the need to install a hydrogen sensor and removes any risk of unwanted reactions with the sample in the hot SSL injector.</li>
<li>When used with hydrogen, the limited carrier gas consumption offered by the HeSaverH2Safer mode permits a very controlled system demand for hydrogen, making this solution ideal for laboratories working with hydrogen generators.</li>
<li>Migrating the GC-MS/MS method from helium to hydrogen requires an adaptation of method parameters to address (i.e., retention time shift and different fragmentation patterns).</li>
<li>97% of pesticides in baby food and 98% in honey showed a linear response in the concentration range 0.005–0.500 mg/kg and the relative standard deviation for N=5 repeats of each sample type at 0.01 mg/kg was equal or lower than 10% for 98% of the evaluated compounds with an advanced electron ionization (AEI) source to increase sensitivity for analyte detection. Quantification and assessment of critical regulatory requirements, such as linearity and sensitivity, were performed in a single software.</li>

<h4>3. Agilent Technologies: <a href="https://gcms.cz/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/po_142_utilizing_hydrogen_pesticides_food_gc_ms_po142_asms2024_en_7ed0951b93.pdf">Analyzing Nitrosamines with Hydrogen Carrier Gas: GC/MS/MS Analysis of Nitrosamines in Sartan Drugs</a></h4>

Introduction: The limited availability of helium has been a concern, leading to a growing interest in switching to alternative carrier gases like hydrogen. Hydrogen offers several advantages over helium1 , including faster run times and improved chromatographic resolution. Helium is commonly used as a carrier gas for analyzing nitrosamine impurities in pharmaceuticals. However, there are concerns that nitrosamines may react with hydrogen, forming unwanted byproducts. To ensure that using hydrogen as a carrier gas does not impact spectral quality, we evaluated its suitability for analyzing eight impurities:

<li>N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA),</li>
<li>N-nitrosomethylethylamine (NMEA),</li>
<li>N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA),</li>
<li>N-nitroso-ethylisopropylamine (NEIPA),</li>
<li>N-nitrosodiisopropylamine (NDIPA),</li>
<li>N-Nitrosodipropylamine (NDPA),</li>
<li>N-nitrosodi-n-butylamine (NDBA),</li>
<li>N-Nitrosopiperidine (NPIP).</li>
</ul>
Hydrogen carrier gas was used with the 7000E and 7010 Series GC/TQ systems equipped with the HydroInert and HES ion sources respectively, assessing spectral quality, linearity, repeatability, recovery, and compliance with nitrosamine analysis regulations.
MassHunter 13 software suite provided the tools for data acquisition and processing to be performed under a unified compliance environment. OpenLab Electronic Content Management (ECM) XT includes native tools to facilitate compliance, including the ability to create users with affiliated permissions, the generation of audit trails, and remote data storage.
Conclusions:
<ul>
<li>The 7000E and 7010 Series GC/TQ systems equipped with the HydroInert and HES, respectively, exhibited exceptional performance in determining eight nitrosamine drug impurities in sartan drug products and substances using hydrogen carrier gas.</li>
<li>The method was validated at 30 ppb with acceptable recovery and long-term repeatability. </li>
<li>The 7010 Series GC/TQ system enabled a smooth switch between helium and hydrogen carrier gas without compromising the performance of the methods. </li>
<li>Both the HydroInert and the HES sources facilitated achieving the necessary detection limits for the tested impurities.</li>

Introduction: Essential oils are typically analyzed to determine their chemical composition contributing to flavor and quality as well as to evaluate their authenticity and identify adulterants. Essential oils are often complex samples with high number of volatile and semi-volatile components that include many isomers with highly similar spectra and close Retention Indices (RIs) when separated on a single column. Hence, a comprehensive GCxGC approach is preferable to achieve an appropriate chromatographic separation for this sample matrix. In this study we used comprehensive GCxGC coupled to a high-resolution accurate mass GC/MS to identify the essential oil components. Here we also investigate approaches for comparison of the complex GCxGC essential oil data.
Conclusions:

<li>Several comprehensive GCxGC configurations and method using the high-resolution GC/Q-TOF and RFM were developed and optimized using a diesel sample. </li>
<li>Essential oils were analyzed using the optimized GCxGC approach, and the workflows for compound identification and statistical analysis were evaluated.</li>

Introduction: Greenhouse gases are a major cause of climate change, and carbon dioxide, (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O) are considered the 3 primary greenhouse gases. Although CO₂ accounts for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions followed by CH₄, reducing CH₄ emissions is considered important because CH₄ has a warming effect that is more than twenty times greater than CO₂. At the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November 2021, over 100 countries joined the Global Methane Pledge, which pledges by 2030 to reduce global CH₄ emissions by 30 % compared to 2020 levels. The Greenhouse Gas Analyzer is a gas chromatography system that has been developed by Shimadzu in collaboration with the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) (Fig. 1). Measuring levels of CH₄, CO₂, and N₂O simultaneously in a single sample is difficult, but the Greenhouse Gas Analyzer has been designed to do this simultaneously, which reduces analytical errors and improves the sampling speed, giving researchers a valuable tool in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Conclusion: The Greenhouse Gas Analyzer can simultaneously measure 3 greenhouse gases in atmospheric air in a single analysis. Each analysis by the Greenhouse Gas Analyzer is performed in 8 minutes with an analysis cycle time of 10 minutes.

Goal: The aim of this study is to demonstrate the suitability of the Thermo Scientific™ TriPlus™ RSH SMART VOC Sample Prep Station for the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in drinking and surface water by using a fully automated sample preparation workflow.

<li>Static headspace is a convenient solventless extraction technique for volatiles in water with almost no sample preparation required. </li>
<li>Unattended operations of up to 210 samples can be achieved with the automated calibration dilution and ISTD addition workflows.</li>
<li>The automated addition of fresh reagent just before the incubation increases the stability of ISTD/surrogates mix, therefore improving the accuracy of the quantitation of target analytes during data reprocessing.</li>
<li>The TriPlus RSH SMART VOC Sample Prep Station ensures increased sample integrity for highly reliable quantitative analysis, and reduced errors or possible cross-contaminations, maximizing the productivity of the laboratory. Additionally, it allows saving valuable analyst time and improving safety by limiting the user’s exposure to toxic chemicals. </li>

Durian (Durio zibethinus), known as the "king of fruits" and widely exported across Southeast Asia, China, and beyond, presents unique analytical challenges due to its sulfur-rich compounds, high fat content, and complex volatile matrix. Comprehensive pesticide analysis in such matrices demands highly sensitive, selective, and robust analytical solutions. The European Union Reference Laboratories (EURL) SANTE/11312/2021 guidelines set rigorous performance criteria for pesticide residue analysis, including strict requirements for method accuracy, precision, and sensitivity.1 Laboratories need to achieve recoveries between 70% to 120%, precision (RSD) below 20%, and quantification limits at or below regulatory maximum residue limits (MRLs), even in complex food matrices such as durian. This application note demonstrates a high-performance workflow for the analysis of 197 pesticides in durian using an Agilent PAL3 Autosampler combined with an Agilent 7000E Triple Quadrupole GC/MSD system. The PAL3 Autosampler provides high-throughput, precise sample handling, while the 7000E GC/MSD offers exceptional sensitivity and reproducibility for trace-level pesticide quantification. Optimized sample preparation and instrumental conditions ensure reliable performance, meeting and exceeding SANTE criteria for method validation.<h4>Experimental</h4><h5>PAL 3 RTC and 7000E GC/TQ parameters&nbsp;</h5>The analysis parameters are shown in Table 1. The optimized workflow, including sample extraction with an Agilent Bond Elut QuEChERS EN kit followed by cleanup with the Highly Pigmented dSPE kit, provided excellent recovery and precision. All target pesticides showed analysis accuracy between 80% and 120% and RSD values below 10% at a spiked level of 10 ppb. The results confirm the method's suitability for routine high-throughput pesticide quantification in complex matrices such as durian. The use of matrix-matched calibration and matrix‑optimized MRMs further ensured accurate and reproducible quantitation, reinforcing the method's applicability for regulatory and food safety testing.<h3>2. A key emphasis is placed on LECO’s innovations in time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS), including the Pegasus series and the new <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=24&amp;search=Pegasus+BTX">Pegasus BTX</a>, a benchtop TOFMS offering high sensitivity, rugged detector technology, fast spectral acquisition (1–500 spectra/s), and broad mass range (10–1500 m/z). This technological foundation supports comprehensive GC×GC-MS workflows essential for analyzing chemically complex matrices such as aviation fuels.A major focus of the talk is on software tools for non-targeted data processing. LECO’s software ecosystem—<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=24&amp;search=ChromaTOF">ChromaTOF</a>, ChromaTOF Tile, and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=24&amp;search=ChromaTOF+Sync">ChromaTOF Sync</a>—enables detailed deconvolution, quantitation, high-resolution spectral analysis, and especially statistical comparison of GC×GC datasets. ChromaTOF Tile uses a chromatographic “tiling” strategy to link datasets and detect differences between sample groups using three statistical metrics: Fisher Ratio, Coefficient of Variation (CoV), and Fold-Change. Each metric serves a different experimental purpose, from comparing traditional vs. synthetic jet fuels (Fisher Ratio) to exploring variability among multiple alternative fuel processes (CoV), or identifying additive components in two-sample comparisons (Fold-Change).The presentation demonstrates how raw GC×GC-MS data are curated into feature tables, statistically evaluated, and visualized in PCA plots, bar charts, and chromatographic overlays. For example, Fisher Ratio comparison highlights statistically significant chemical differences between conventional Jet A and synthetic fuels, while CoV analysis reveals clustering patterns among diverse synthetic fuel production pathways such as LT-FT SPK, HT-FT SPK, HEFA, SIP, ATJ, and CHJ. These workflows enable analysts to rapidly identify biomarkers or distinguishing compositional features within highly complex hydrocarbon matrices.Ultimately, the talk demonstrates that choosing the correct statistical processing method can dramatically simplify interpretation of complex GC×GC-MS datasets. LECO’s integrated instrumentation—particularly the Pegasus BTX TOFMS—and software platforms together provide a powerful toolkit for fuel characterization, quality evaluation, and differentiation of emerging alternative aviation fuels. Shimadzu: Analysis of Formic Acid in Acetone Using GC/MS System</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_01_00957_en_e8b083b86e.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>In research on artificial photosynthesis, the analysis of impurities in chemical products and raw materials has increased the demand for high-sensitivity analysis of formic acid. Previous examples of formic acid analysis using GC-BID and GC-FID (Jetanizer ) have been presented, but in this article high-sensitivity analysis of formic acid using the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=GCMS-QP2050">GCMS-QP2050</a> (see Fig. 1) isintroduced.<h4>Insert, Column Phosphoric Acid Treatment&nbsp;</h4>Formic acid is known to adsorb onto the injection port and column, making peak detection difficult. However, by performing phosphoric acid treatment on the glass insert and column before measurement, good peaks can be obtained. The procedure for phosphoric acid treatment of the glass insert is shown in Fig. 2, and the procedure for phosphoric acid treatment of the column isshown in Fig. 3.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>By performing phosphoric acid treatment on the insert and column, it became possible to analyze formic acid in SIM mode down to 0.2 ppm. Furthermore, good results could be obtained for both linearity and repeatability. Additionally, by analyzing in Scan mode, identification of unknown peaks other than formic acid was also achieved.<h3>4. Many of these compounds contaminate our environment and may cause negative health effects in humans and other living beings. Analytical laboratories must monitor a variety of sample types from the environment to ensure the public are not exposed to elevated levels of VOCs. The latest version of applicable method in the United States, U.S. EPA Method 8260C, is applicable when monitoring a variety of solid waste matrices for the presence of VOCs.To perform U.S. EPA Method 8260C, all method acceptance criteria must be achieved. These criteria include calculating the mean response factor and the relative standard deviation (RSD) of the response factors for target analytes. The RSD should be &lt;20%, with minimum response factors (RF) and MDLs for a wide range of target compounds. The analytical method must produce consistent results and be reproducible from day to day, with a continuing calibration verification (CCV) analyzed every 12 hours while samples are run. As the method covers varying matrices, it is important that the performance criteria are met in all samples of interest. The following evaluation describes the use of the ISQ 7610 GCMS coupled to the Atomx XYZ P&amp;T for U.S. EPA Method 8260C.<h4>Experimental</h4><h5>Instrument control and data processing&nbsp;</h5>Data were acquired, processed, and reported using <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/76">Chromeleon CDS software</a>, version 7.2. This software can control both the GC-MS system and the Tekmar Atomx XYZ P&amp;T. This enables a single software solution to support the full workflow, simplifying the instrument operation. The optimized method used within this application note is available for download via the Thermo Scientific™ AppsLab library. AppsLab contains all the parameters needed to acquire, process, and report the analytical data for U.S. EPA Method 8260C.2<h5>GC-MS parameters&nbsp;</h5>A <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/486">TRACE 1610 GC</a> was coupled to the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/484">ISQ 7610 MS </a>equipped with the Thermo Scientific™ NeverVent™ vacuum probe interlock (VPI) and an ExtractaBrite™ ion source. Expanded method parameters for the GC-MS system are displayed in Table 3<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>The combined analytical solution with the TRACE 1610 GC coupled with the ISQ 7610 system and the Atomx XYZ P&amp;T system provides clear advantages for analytical testing laboratories that analyze environmental samples following the U.S. EPA Method 8260C requirements. The modularity of the TRACE 1610 GC as well as the ISQ 7610 VPI and ExtractaBrite ion source allows users to easily service the injection ports and to exchange ionization sources and analytical columns without venting the mass spectrometer, significantly reducing instrument downtime and minimizing sample analysis interruptions. The Atomx XYZ concentrator’s efficient trap cooling design reduces sample cycle time and allows for increased sample throughput. The moisture control system improves water vapor removal thereby reducing peak interference and increasing GC column life span.&nbsp;The experiments performed clearly demonstrate the suitability of this analytical configuration for the analysis of VOCs in various environmental samples in accordance with U.S. EPA Method 8260C with the following performance parameters as evidence:&nbsp;<ul><li>The ISQ 7610 VPI coupled with the Tekmar Atomx XYZ P&amp;T exceeds all the requirements outlined in U.S. EPA Method 8260C for analysis of VOCs in wastewater and solid waste.</li><li>Linearity was achieved with &lt;20%,&nbsp;relative standard deviation for both water and soil calibration curves for the majority of compounds.&nbsp;</li><li>The MDL and precision were assessed using n=7 replicates of a 0.2 ppb water standard and n=7 replicates of a 0.5 ppb soil standard. Calculated MDLs were &lt;0.2ppb and RSDs of calculated results were &lt;10% for most compounds in both the soil and water matrices.</li><li>System robustness was tested by continuously acquiring 240 injections of environmental samples over three days with no user intervention at all. The average %RSD of the calculated concentration was 8.30% with an average compound recovery of 90%.</li></ul>

Among these, toluene is the most prevalent in nail polish formulations, where it serves as a solvent to dissolve resins and pigments, ensuring smooth application, uniform color dispersion, and rapid drying. Historically, these properties made toluene a preferred ingredient in nail coatings, including traditional polishes, gel formulations, and nail art products. However, its inclusion presents challenges for regulatory compliance and product reformulation. In response to these challenges, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) has listed nail products containing toluene as Priority Products under the Safer Consumer Products Regulations.1 Manufacturers selling such products in California must submit a Priority Product Notification and conduct an Alternative Analysis if toluene concentrations exceed the 100-ppm threshold.&nbsp;To support compliance and ensure accurate monitoring of BTEX levels in nail products, robust analytical methods are essential. Solid phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography/triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC/TQ) has emerged as a preferred approach for volatile organic compound analysis due to its solvent-free sample preparation, high sensitivity, and compatibility with complex cosmetic matrices. The 8890 GC with 7000 Series GC/TQ offers enhanced detection capabilities through dynamic multiple reaction monitoring (dMRM), enabling precise quantification of BTEX compounds at trace levels, below regulatory thresholds. This platform provides the analytical rigor required for method validation, including limits of detection, recovery, and precision, ensuring compliance with California's stringent performance criteria and supporting industry efforts toward improving consumer product&nbsp;quality.&nbsp;<h4>Experimental</h4><h5>GC/TQ analysis&nbsp;</h5>Analyses were performed on an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=8890+GC">8890 GC</a> coupled to a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=7000">7000 Series GC/TQ </a>equipped with an EI extractor ion source (Figure 2). The instrument operating parameters are listed in Table 2. The system was operated in splitless mode with an inlet temperature of 200&nbsp;°C, a purge flow of 3 mL/min, and a purge flow to split vent of 50&nbsp;mL/min at 2&nbsp;minutes. Carrier gas was helium at a constant flow of 0.693&nbsp;mL/min with a total flow of 53.7 mL/min. The chromatographic separation was accomplished on an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=DB-624+Ultra+Inert+column">Agilent J&amp;W DB-624 Ultra Inert column</a> (20&nbsp;m × 0.18&nbsp;mm, 1&nbsp;µm, part number 121-1324UI). The oven program started at 40&nbsp;°C (hold 2&nbsp;minutes), ramped at 35&nbsp;°C/min to 160&nbsp;°C, and held for 2.58&nbsp;minutes, giving a total run time of 8.0&nbsp;minutes. The transfer line was maintained at 230&nbsp;°C, with the ion source at 230&nbsp;°C and quadrupoles at 150&nbsp;°C.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>A rapid, high-throughput headspace‑SPME GC/TQ method was developed for quantifying BTEX in nail product matrices, using a 100-µm PDMS Agilent Smart SPME fiber on an Agilent 8890 GC with Agilent 7000 Series GC/TQ. The method provides solvent-free extraction, 8-minute chromatographic runs, and an ~11-minute total cycle time, enabling high-throughput analysis with robust selectivity in dMRM mode. Quality control results demonstrated mean recoveries of 100 to 107% with RSDs ≤ 8%, meeting method acceptance criteria for compliance-focused testing for toluene. Integration of Smart SPME automation and the intelligent features of the 8890 GC and 7000 Series GC/TQ allows a practical, defensible solution for routine laboratories monitoring BTEX in nail products. Calibration performance showed high linearity and low variance across the working ranges, with all compounds meeting initial calibration criteria via R² ≥ 0.995 or average RF RSD ≤ 20%. Combined with the short cycle time and automated fiber tracking, this workflow is ideally suited for routine compliance testing of BTEX in nail products using the 8890 GC and 7000&nbsp;Series GC/TQ.<h3>2. BaySpec: Detection of residual pesticides on fruits and vegetables using Portability miniature mass s pectrometer</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/Bay_Spec_App_Note_Portability_Pesticides_4a7311fb3e.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Pesticides are used in a variety of different ways during the production of food. Ranging from preventing crop damage by insects, rodents and molds during growth to prolonging storage of food after harvest. Because of the frequent usage, the residual pesticides are often found in many agricultural products and their monitoring and control is an important step in achieving and maintaining overall food safety in the modern society.&nbsp;Mass spectrometry in connection with different separation techniques currently represents the main analytical approach for determination of residual pesticides in food. Traditionally, samples need to be collected and send to a laboratory for analysis using techniques such as GC-MS or HPLC-MS, which are costly and time-consuming. In addition, the conventional mass spectrometry usually requires laborious sample pretreatment, which does not allow for immediate in-situ sample determination. Presented here is an application of Thermal Desorption ElectroSpray Ionization (TD-ESI) for pesticide screening coupled to a portable mass spectrometer.&nbsp;TD-ESI is a mass spectrometry technique from the family of ambient ionization methods that utilizes very simple probing of different surfaces with no or limited sample pretreatment while it is still noted for its selective and sensitive detection capabilities. In TD-ESI a solid surface or a liquid sample is touched by a simple metallic probe that absorbs the analyte. The probe is then inserted into a heated tube and the desorbed analyte is carried by gas flow into an orthogonally mounted electrospray. The electrospraty plume extracts the analyte and further ionization and ion introduction follows the conventional electrospray mechanism.&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/2219">Bayspec’s Portability mass spectrometer</a> is less than 10kg highly portable and battery operated linear ion trap mass spectrometer with atmospheric pressure inlet (API). When TD-ESI is combined with PortabilityTM then it is possible to perform fast in-field detection of analytes including residual pesticides, directly of the surfaces of fresh food products without any sample pre-treatment. Fast pesticide screening by Portability mass spectrometer can immediately disclose fake organic food products as well as to discover elevated levels of residual pesticides.&nbsp;TD-ESI-MS was used to rapidly screen residual pesticides on the surfaces of different fruits and vegetables. Direct sampling probe was used to introduce analytes from surfaces of unprocessed samples. Due to short analysis times (1-5s a sample), the technique allows for fast screening for applications in food and environmental safety. MS (as well as MS/MS) analyses can be performed on surface-residual pesticides at ppm and sub-ppm levels. The miniaturized TD-ESI ion source compatible with Portability is available from BaySpec. This ion source mounts on the Portability front inlet and does not require any additional support, external power or gases. The simple intuitive software interface is operated by touch screen and makes the instrument extremely easy to control. The external TD-ESI source is fully integrated into the main software environment and the hyphenated system is thus very user-friendly, does not require excessive training and can be operated by persons with no previous mass spectrometry experiences.<h3>3. MDCW / William &amp; Mary: Volatile Characterization of American Foulbrood Disease Using Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography</h3><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/P_15_Christensen_39521e3391.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>American foulbrood (AFB) is a deadly disease spread by Paenibacillus larvae bacterial spores, targeting the brood stage of Apis mellifera honey bees. Broods perish in a matter of days after exposure to the spores, forming infected colloidal scales in the hive that adult bees cannot remove. 1,2 The spores are extremely persistent and resistant to typical treatment methods, which standardized the immediate euthanasia of bees and destruction of the hive and associated equipment by burning. 3 In an effort to expedite identification of the spores, scent-detection dogs have been trained for use in apiaries. Furthermore, gammairradiation has been tested as a proposed treatment method as it would offer a nondestructive alternative to sterilization.The goals of this study were to use comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography – time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) to characterize the volatiles associated with AFB disease for understanding scent detection and to measure the effectiveness of gamma-irradiation in sterilizing these volatiles.<h4>Methods</h4>Samples included blanks, material from healthy comb, aged unsterilized diseased scales, fresh unsterilized diseased scales, and diseased scales sterilized with the proposed treatment method of gamma-irradiation. These samples were stored in headspace vials (Figure 3) in the freezer when not in use. No sample preparation was required before injection with solidphase microextraction using the LPAL-3 (CTC Analytics).Analysis was performed using a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/37">Pegasus BT4D</a> (LECO Corporation) according to the parameters described below in Table 1. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/products/41">ChromaTOF software</a> (LECO Corporation) was used to analyze the chromatographic data. Preliminary identifications were assigned to peaks using a minimum signal to noise of 200 and a minimum stick count of 3.<h4>Conclusions</h4>GC×GC-TOFMS can be used to distinguish the volatile profiles of A. mellifera samples at different stages of infection with AFB disease.
