SeparationScience: From Peaks to Insights: Navigating Environmental Analysis with Weck Laboratories using GC/MS/MS Instrumentation

This presentation highlights how Weck Laboratories leverages the latest triple quadrupole GC/MS (GC/TQ) technology—equipped with the advanced HES 2.0 (High Efficiency Source 2.0)—to deliver high-sensitivity, high-throughput analysis of complex environmental samples. We will demonstrate the performance of this system when applying EPA methods 8270 and 625.1 to real-world soil and water matrices.

As a full-service environmental laboratory operating at production scale, Weck Laboratories requires both sensitivity and reliability to meet tight turnaround times and maintain productivity. The GC/TQ system with HES 2.0 enables precise quantification of trace-level contaminants while requiring less sample volume. This reduces shipping and prep costs and minimizes instrument wear. The HES 2.0 source further enhances performance by increasing ion transmission, lowering detection limits, and supporting longer maintenance intervals—even when running challenging, matrix-heavy samples.

Attendees will see how this robust configuration improves data quality and throughput, particularly in routine environmental workflows. We'll explore how the system maintains stability over large sample batches and complex matrices without signal drift or fouling, ensuring uninterrupted analysis.

Ultimately, this session will demonstrate how integrating GC/TQ with HES 2.0 supports the demands of modern environmental testing—delivering reliable results with greater speed and efficiency.

By attending this presentation, you will learn how to:
  • Apply EPA methods 8270 and 625.1 using GC/TQ instrumentation to analyze real-world soil and water samples.
  • Evaluate the performance of the HES 2.0 ion source in supporting low-level detection of environmental contaminants in complex matrices.
  • Identify operational benefits and limitations of using triple quadrupole GC/MS in high-throughput environmental testing workflows.

Duration: Approximately 1 hour

Who Should Attend?
  • Laboratory managers
  • Lab analysts
  • GC/MS scientists, analysts, and lab technicians
  • GC/TQ users
  • Environmental analysts

Presenter: Dr. Agustin Pierri (Laboratory Technical Director, Weck Laboratories)

Dr. Agustin Pierri leads scientific and technical efforts to advance environmental testing. He holds a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Southern California and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Since joining Weck Labs, Dr. Pierri has worked as an analyst across various sections of the laboratory, gaining a comprehensive understanding of laboratory operations. In 2007, he began specializing in LC-MS/MS, developing all analytical methods using this technique. Before his appointment as Technical Director in July 2016, he served as the Methods Development Manager, overseeing method development across all laboratory departments. His work focuses on creating analytical methods for emerging contaminants and modernizing legacy techniques to improve data quality and achieve lower detection limits. In 2020, Dr. Pierri was appointed to the Environmental Laboratory Technical Advisory Committee, an advisory body to the California Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP), recognizing his leadership and expertise in environmental analysis.
