Separation Science: Advanced GC–MS Techniques in Polymer Chemistry
Separation Science: Advanced GC–MS Techniques in Polymer Chemistry

Regulatory pressure and consumer awareness have increased the focus on reducing chemical emissions from materials, which has subsequently become a critical area of research and innovation for the polymer industry. With growing attention on environmental sustainability and public health, manufacturers are compelled to address the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other chemicals released during the production and lifecycle of polymer-based products. These emissions have far-reaching impacts, affecting not only the environment but also consumer health, due to the potential presence of harmful chemicals in everyday products and the detrimental effect of off-odors on customer comfort.

This webinar examines the latest trends and technologies in sampling and analysis of material emissions in the polymer industry. Learn how advanced analytical techniques, such as thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD–GC–MS) and other state-of-the-art methods like GC×GC, are revolutionizing the way emissions are characterized. By understanding and mitigating these emissions, industries can enhance product safety, meet stringent regulatory standards, and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment.

By attending this webinar, you will:

  • Discover the challenges involved in the analysis of VOCs from polymers
  • Learn how TD–GC–MS can improve the detection of trace compounds, including odorants
  • Explore real-world examples of emissions considerations applied to polymers

Who should attend:

  • Polymer scientists who want to understand more about odors and emissions from recycled plastics
  • Sustainability experts who want to enhance their ability to analyze complex VOC profiles
  • Industrial and analytical researchers focused on R&D in the polymer sector

Presenter: Caroline Widdowson (Material Emissions Specialist, Markes International)

Caroline works for Markes International, an advanced analytical instrument manufacturer. Having completed her chemistry degree at Cardiff University, she followed on with a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry then an MBA. As part of her current role, Caroline advises manufacturers, test laboratories, and research institutes on equipment needed to monitor interior environments and study chemical emissions from materials. Caroline is the Chair of the UK BSi committee developing standard methods for the sampling and analysis of chemicals from products and materials (BSi EH2/5); she also participates in ISO, ASTM, and CEN standards and national regulatory committees relating to this area.
