Agilent Technologies: Rapid food and feed analysis through VOC analysis using SICRIT technology

Whether you are analyzing for food contaminants such as PFAS or pesticide residues, screening for food adulteration in tea, or profiling the flavor of alternative proteins, trusted answers is critical in food testing.

Agilent keeps you at the forefront of the latest trends in food testing – so you can deliver the highest quality and value to your customers. Join us in this webinar series as food testing experts from all over the world talk share their robust and reliable workflow solutions to meet the challenges in food safety, authenticity, and quality testing. These experts have allotted ample time for discussion so share your thoughts and bring in your questions!

Food and animal feed analysis typically relies on complex, slow and expensive techniques which can take hours or days to highlight problems with incoming and outgoing food ingredients, animal feeds and retail produce. The adoption of a rapid, inexpensive but accurate and reliable mass spectrometry based real time monitoring technology has the potential to provide a step-change in monitoring the safety and quality of food and feed.

This talk will demonstrate recent work undertaking using SICRIT technology for both targeted and untargeted food and feed monitoring tasks. Firstly, the capabilities of the SICRIT source when combined with a compact and inexpensive triple quadrupole mass spectrometer for targeted analysis will be discussed, followed by the use of the SICRIT source on both triple quadrupole and time-of-flight instrumentation for untargeted screening.

The potential for the implementation of one or more workflows within a factory or production environment, including the challenges and opportunities will then be introduced.

Key Learning Objectives/What attendees will learn:

  • New methods of rapid screening of foods and animal feeds

  • Capabilities of the SICRIT ion source when used with different instrument types

  • Challenges and opportunities introduced by the adoption of such technology

Who Should Attend:

  • Analytical scientists, food quality and safety management, academic research facility managers

Presenter: Nicholas Birse, PhD (Queen’s University Belfast)

Nick Birse is a Lecturer in Mass Spectrometry at Queen’s University Belfast. He previously served as a Research Fellow within Prof Chris Elliott’s research group, assisting in the execution of Chris’s 2021 Agilent Thought Leader Award. He holds a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Queen’s University Belfast and one of his main research interests is the application of mass spectrometry to industrial and commercial applications.
