Residual solvents are volatile chemicals used in the manufacturing of cannabinoid products for use in medicinal or adult recreational programs, in U.S. states or other countries where such usage has been legalized. Terpenes are synthesized by the plants and engender the characteristic aroma of cannabis and hemp. The analysis of residual solvents in these products is a matter of safety to ensure their concentrations do not exceed regulated levels. On the other hand, unless there is a specific product label claim, terpene analyses are typically a quality test that provides a chemical profile of the product.

Agilent Technologies has developed and fully vetted a novel approach for these analyses built around the Agilent Intuvo 9000 GC. This single instrument system provides both headspace and liquid injection analysis, making testing as simple as loading the samples and clicking “Run”. The residual solvents method leverages the “Power of 100” paradigm Agilent has used for high-throughput cannabis laboratories

Key learning objectives:

Attendees will learn key aspects for success for the analysis of residual solvents in cannabinoid products using headspace-GC/MS and terpenes analysis on the same instrument platform and configuration using liquid injection. Other learning objectives will include rationale for liquid injection terpenes analysis and an array of tips and tricks

Presenter: Anthony Macherone, Ph.D (Senior Scientist, Agilent Technologies & Visiting Professor, Johns Hopkins)

Dr. Macherone is currently a Senior Scientist with Agilent Technologies and a Visiting Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. For the past several years, Anthony has been leading a team of Agilent scientists for the development and deployment of analytical testing methodologies to assure quality and safety of cannabis products and written extensively on cannabis testing methodologies. In June 2020, Anthony joined Cannabis Science and Technology®’s Editorial Advisory Board.
