The characterization of fatty acids is one of the major applications of gas chromatography in edible vegetable oils, like palm oil, canola oil, etc. In general, GC can be applied to the analysis of intact lipids, such as triacylglycerols, or the analysis of the fatty acid composition based on fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) profiling.

A broad range of columns and stationary phases are available for vegetable oil analysis.

In this webinar, some of our new GC column technology for the fast analysis of these FAMEs is presented, and the GC column selection is discussed. Based on the complexity of the samples, different column technologies can be applied, and a trade-off can be made between sample throughput and resolution. We will also show the difference in analysis time and separation when switching from Helium to alternative carrier gases, like Nitrogen.

Presenter: Gustavo Serrano (Global Product Manager – GC Columns, Agilent Technologies USA)

Gustavo Serrano is the GC Columns Product Manager at Agilent Technologies in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. Gustavohas a broad background in GC technologies, including experience as an R&D scientist and Product Manager at Sigma-Aldrich/Supelco, where he worked on the development and commercialization of novel GC stationary phases. He has also published extensively in the fields of portable micro GC systems, GC columns and micro thermal modulators for GC×GC applications. Gustavo holds a PhD in Environmental Health Sciences from the University of Michigan, and an MBA from the University of Indiana – Bloomington.
