Agilent Technologies: Low and High Resolution GCMS for Untargeted Metabolomics

In this tutorial, Fernanda Rey-Stolle and Prof. Antonia Garcia from the Centre of Excellence in Metabolomics and Bioanalysis (CEMBIO) will discuss:

  • GC-MS versus other analytical techniques for metabolic profiling
  • Main steps in the metabolomics workflow
  • Type of biological samples and strategies for volatile derivatives
  • Internal standards, why and how many?
  • Pre-processing data and identification: deconvolution, libraries & retention index
  • Quantification. Discussion of particular aspects, target ion and multiple derivatives
  • Applications in health and disease
  • High resolution vs low resolution MS. Strengths for identification of unknowns. A case study.

Presenter: Antonia García (Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Pharmacy Faculty, San Pablo CEUUniversity, Madrid)

She is currently Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Pharmacy Faculty, Universidad San Pablo CEU, Madrid (Spain) and cofounder members of the Centre for Metabolomics and Bioanalysis of San Pablo CEU University (Madrid, Spain) in 2008. Her research has been focused on development and validation of chromatographic methods for metabolomics based on mass spectrometry multiplatforms (LC, CE and GC) in the study of several diseases such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, infectious, lung and cardiovascular diseases. 8 supervised theses. National and international grants as PI. Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis Editorial Board member.

Presenter: Fernanda Rey-Stolle (Senior Lecturer and Researcher, San Pablo CEU University, Madrid)

She is senior lecturer and researcher at San Pablo CEU University since 1994. Since 2013 she is a member of CEMBIO (Centre of Excellence in Metabolomics and Bioanalysis), focusing her research on the application of the GC-MS technique to metabolomic studies. She has participated in 16 Projects and/or Research Contracts, in 2 of them as PI. She is coauthor of 43 articles and has presented more than 50 oral communications and posters in relevant International Congresses. She has been a member of the scientific/organizing committee of 9 International and National congresses.
