Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), furans (PCDFs) and biphenyls (PCBs) continue to be analyzed all around the world in a wide variety of sample matrices, including environmental and food. The need for accurate, fast, and reliable sample extraction, cleanup and analysis has inspired both semi-automated and fully automated systems for the several steps in POPs sample processing.

A closed semi-automated cleanup system using a vacuum pump as the only mechanical part was developed with acidified silica, alumina, and carbon columns to oxidize the matrix structure (e.g., lipid) and remove interferences. The sample cleanup process can be accomplished in 35 to 60 minutes depending on sample matrix. The cleanup system is suitable for a wide range of matrices, such as air, food, soil, sludge, and water samples. Matrices such as eggs, feed, oils, and soil showed very good recoveries (70%-110%) for both PCDD/Fs and PCBs. Because the system is composed of disposable parts, risk of cross-contamination is very low. The system can be set up at low cost. Certified columns and the simple semi-automated system guarantee same day POPs analysis.

We will discuss several cleanup methods with data and show how the Agilent 7010 GC-MS/MS instrument can be used for state-of-art dioxin and PCB work at levels of sensitivity equal to or better than magnetic sector instruments.

By attending this webinar you will learn about:

  • Semi-automated cleanup can greatly assist in fast and reliable sample processing for PCDD/Fs and PCBs measurements.
  • The Agilent 7010 GC-MS/MS instrument can successfully carry out the analytical part of this process.

Who should attend:

  • Analytical scientists/technicians involved in routine dioxin testing
  • Lab directors of food and environmental testing laboratories
  • Analytical scientists/researchers with interest in the use of triple quadrupole GC/MS for routine analyses

Presenter: Ruud Addink (Technical Director of the Applications Laboratory, Fluid Management Systems (Billerica, MA, USA))

Ruud Addink holds degrees in Environmental Chemistry from the Universities of Leiden and Amsterdam (PhD) in the Netherlands. Previously he worked at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, on formation of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in combustion and waste incineration.
