SEMI-VOLATILES SUPERVISOR (GC, GC/MS)

About the role:

The primary purpose of this position is to oversee Semi-Volatiles Organic Prep and Instrumentation Area and will be responsible for ensuring the efficient running of the laboratory, advising the department manager of any possible ways to increase productivity and efficiency through equipment upgrading, method enhancements or implementation of new technology; any deficiencies in staff numbers, training, consumable stock and new products. This individual will manage all employee issues.

Responsibilities

About you:
  • Overseeing staff within the section.

  • Maximum efficiency and productivity in the section. Fostering a work ethic within the section that increases productivity by:

  • Ensuring resources are utilized effectively and efficiently.

  • Minimizing waste (e.g. solvent, glassware, reagents, standards, etc.).

  • Reducing breakage (e.g. glassware, equipment, etc.).

  • Optimizing the work hours within the laboratory.

  • Addressing staff moral and performance issues, informing the department manager/laboratory manager, where necessary.

  • Maintaining an acceptable turnaround of tasks or results within the section, including meeting holding times. Additionally, will contribute to efficiencies in this area on continual basis.

  • Ensuring all duties within the section are conducted in accordance with the Quality Procedures Manual. Keeping up to date with changes in methodology within the section. Will work with QA to update SOP’s and manuals as necessary.

  • Work with other supervisors, managers and Laboratory Directors to achieve client satisfaction on TAT, improve and maintain relationships to other sections.

  • Training and developing of employees.

  • Have a working knowledge of GC instrumentation and can help troubleshoot instrument issues.

  • Have a working knowledge of extractions of soils, wastewater, ground water, drinking water and other matrices.

  • Assist in monitoring instrument performance and identify deviations from specification and notifying Manager or Laboratory Director if the instrument is not operating to specifications, including when instrument QC fall outside control limits.

  • Have a working knowledge and understanding of the ALS quality management systems including MDL/LOD/LOQ studies, SOP reviews, DOC requirements, and audit responses are completed in a timely manner.

  • Be aware of requirements for laboratory competence.

  • Complete performance evaluations and establish individual goals for department personnel on an annual basis.

  • Uphold and enforce safety regulations as dictated and directed by corporate policy and the safety representative.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • 4 year college degree from an accredited educational institute in the chemical, environmental, biological or physical science or equivalent experience.

  • 4-10 years of experience with GCMS, GC, auto-samplers (EST and Atomix), procedures/analyses in an environmental laboratory.

Physical Demands:
  • Able to speak and hear clearly while communicating with staff, management and clients.

  • Dexterity in hands and fingers to operate computer and instrumentation.

  • Average vision and able to see to read reports and operate instrumentation.

  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, and lift for 100% of an 8+ hour day.

  • Ability to work overtime when needed.

  • Able to lift up to 50+ lbs.
