Regional Laboratory Manager

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Regional Laboratory Manager to lead our regional laboratory operations based in Hastings, NZ.

This is a senior leadership role responsible for the operational, technical, people, quality, safety and commercial performance of the region’s laboratories.

About the Role

Reporting to the Business Manager NZ, you will have full responsibility for the effective operation of the regional laboratories, ensuring high-quality service delivery, optimal turnaround times, and strong client relationships, while maintaining compliance with quality, health, safety and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Laboratory & Operations Leadership
  • Ensure laboratories are appropriately equipped, resourced and staffed to deliver high-quality services.
  • Optimise sample turnaround times without compromising quality.
  • Manage all aspects of laboratory operations, including sample receipt, holding times, soil and water preparation teams.
  • Monitor workloads and assign reporting due dates to balance capacity and client requirements.
  • Proactively resolve client work order issues and improve workflow efficiency.
  • Manage staffing levels through labour planning and cross-training.
  • Ensure invoicing is accurate and up to date at month end.
  • Regularly assess laboratory operations to improve productivity, efficiency, safety and teamwork.
People & Resource Management
  • Lead, develop and support laboratory staff across the region.
  • Oversee recruitment, induction, performance management and career development.
  • Ensure all staff receive appropriate technical, supervisory and safety training.
  • Promote effective communication and teamwork across regional sites.
  • Liaise with HR on performance issues, redundancies or dismissals as required.
Quality Management
  • Ensure compliance with ALS quality systems, ISO 17025 and IANZ requirements.
  • Maintain and improve the integrity of the laboratory quality systems.
  • Ensure approved methodologies and work instructions are followed.
  • Review quality investigations, audits and client complaints and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure all training is documented and maintained in training records and matrices.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment meets quality and accreditation standards.
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
  • Champion a strong safety and sustainability culture through visible leadership.
  • Ensure full compliance with ALS HSE policies, procedures and legislation.
  • Provide a safe working environment and appropriate safety equipment.
  • Identify, report and rectify unsafe practices or environmental risks.
Business & Client Development
  • Develop new clients and business opportunities across the region.
  • Maintain strong client relationships through regular engagement and support.
  • Promote ALS services through preparation and follow-up of quotations and tenders.
  • Monitor market satisfaction and provide feedback to the Business Manager.
  • Deliver monthly reports outlining business activities, performance and opportunities.
  • Achieve agreed business targets and KPIs.

About You

Essential Skills, Experience & Knowledge
  • Tertiary qualifications in Science and/or Business.
  • Proven laboratory and people management experience, ideally across multiple sites or regions.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory operations, workflows and quality systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in client service, client liaison and business development.
  • Strong safety-focused leadership approach.
  • Ability to manage change in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid understanding of business fundamentals, including financial control.
  • Strong decision-making, negotiation and conflict management skills.
  • Highly organised with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
  • Self-motivated, resilient and able to operate with minimal supervision.
Additional Requirements
  • IANZ signatory (KTP) status or the ability to attain this where possible.
  • Availability to travel regularly within the region as required.
