Laboratory Analyst

About the Position:

The Laboratory Analyst will work independently and as part of a team to accomplish a variety of lab tasks, including analyses, lab maintenance, and generating data.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Analysis of semi-volatile parameters using GCMS. Acquisition and calculations are performed using GCMS Chemstation and Target softwares;
  • Analysis of volatile parameters using headspace GCMS. Acquisition and calculations are performed using GCMS Chemstation, Target, and ChromPerfect softwares;
  • Daily tasks will include GC maintenance and basic troubleshooting;
  • Extractions in the lab, as needed;
  • Work-scheduling for a particular instrument or analytical method – includes the use of Webview;
  • Prepare all required reagents, standards, reference materials, etc.;
  • Carry out all required data processing (i.e. calculations, data review, data entry, archival, etc. Including the use of ALSTools and Seedpak);
  • Perform all required quality control procedures;
  • Carry out all required record-keeping & documentation;
  • Communicate with the Client Services staff as required;
  • Deliver accurate results to our clients in a timely manner;
  • Technical decision making for non-routine, complex analyses or matrices;
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and adhere to strict QA/QC requirements;
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Good English communication skills (auditory, verbal, written, and reading) as required;
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) at an intermediate level;
  • Excellent computer skills;
  • Accurate and efficient data entry skills;
  • Capability to perform repetitive tasks correctly in a fast-paced environment;
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to meet strict deadlines such as Turnaround Times (TAT) and holding requirements;
  • Analytical and process oriented skills with the ability to critically think in ambiguous situations;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • A strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required;
  • A commitment to excellence and a client-focused attitude.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of B.Sc. or Technical Diploma in Chemistry or a related discipline (required);
  • 2-3 years’ experience in an analytical laboratory (required);
  • Minimum 1 year previous experience with GC, GCMS, ICP, and ICP-MS instrumentation (required).

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs./14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Ability to climb stairs;
  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required.
  • Ability to stand for up to a full shift;
  • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
  • You may be exposed to unpleasant fumes;
  • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.

  • An estimated hourly pay of $27.43 CAD at the time of posting. Individual compensation is determined by factors such as job-related skills, relevant experience, education and/or training.
