<p><strong>How did HUPO evolve?</strong></p>
<p>HUPO was launched on February 9, 2001. On that date, a global advisory council was officially formed that included leading global experts in the field of proteomics from the academic, government, and commercial sectors. Over the next 12 months, the council, in consultation with industry, identified major proteomics issues and initiatives that needed to be addressed by HUPO. Since its inception, HUPO has received substantial financial assistance from Genome Quebec, Montreal International, McGill University, the National Institutes of Health, and pharmaceutical companies, among others. In addition, it has benefited from considerable in-kind contributions of time and energy from HUPO Council members, research institutes, and pharmaceutical company partners around the world.</p>
<p>HUPO Initiatives are prominently showcased at each Annual HUPO World Congress, which are held as per a three year rotation in the Americas, Asia/Oceania and Europe. Past congresses have been held in cities such as Versailles, France (2002), Montreal, Canada (2003), Beijing, China (2004), Munich, Germany (2005). Long Beach, USA (2006), Seoul, Korea (2007), Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2008) and Toronto, Canada (2009). The number of participants and exhibitors has significantly increased over the years and the Congresses are a must attend for anyone involved in proteomics.</p>

ASMS: The American Society for Mass Spectrometry

<h3><strong>What is ASMS and How does it function</strong></h3>
<p><a href="https://www.asms.org/"><strong>The American Society for Mass Spectrometry</strong> (<strong>ASMS</strong>)</a> was formed in 1969 to promote and disseminate knowledge of mass spectrometry and allied topics. Membership includes over 8,500 scientists involved in research and development. Members come from academic, industrial and governmental laboratories. Their interests include advancement of techniques and instrumentation in mass spectrometry, as well as fundamental research in chemistry, geology, forensics, biological sciences and physics.</p>
<p>ASMS is a 501 c 3 non-profit corporation governed by an elected Board of Directors.</p>
<h4><strong>ASMS sponsors the Annual Conference on Mass Spectrometry</strong> and Allied Topics that is attended by more than 6,500 scientists. Over 3,000 papers are presented as posters and talks.</h4>

<p>Each year at the annual conference ASMS holds a meeting for its membership and the community. This is the &#39;ASMS Meeting&#39; (formerly known as the Business Meeting). Updates on the status of the Society are provided by each Board member. In addition, several awards are recognized at the meeting.</p>

<h3><strong>About JASMS</strong></h3>
<p><a href="https://pubs.acs.org/journal/jamsef"><strong>Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (JASMS)</strong></a> is a monthly, peer-reviewed journal that covers all aspects of mass spectrometry, including fields of scientific inquiry in which mass spectrometry can play a role.</p>
<p>JASMS was launched in 1990 as a bi-monthly publication with Michael L. Gross as Editor in Chief.  In 1993, the publication frequency was increased to monthly.   </p>
<p>Comprehensive in scope, the journal publishes papers on both fundamentals and applications of mass spectrometry. Fundamental subjects include instrumentation principles, design, and demonstration, structures and chemical properties of gas-phase ions, studies of thermodynamic properties, ion spectroscopy, chemical kinetics, mechanisms of ionization, theories of ion fragmentation, cluster ions, and potential energy surfaces.</p>
<p>Papers that report on an application should have as a principal focus the use of mass spectrometry to solve a qualitative or quantitative problem. Application subjects include, but are not limited to, structural elucidation, biopolymer sequencing, development or validation of new methodology, proteomics and other &#39;omics related research, and environmental and forensic measurements. Papers describing computer applications will be considered.</p>
<p>In addition to full papers, the journal offers Communications, Application Notes, and Accounts and Perspectives. </p>
<p>ASMS members receive subscription and access to JASMS as a benefit of membership.</p>

SETAC: The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry

<h3><strong>Our Story</strong></h3>
<p>SETAC was founded in the late 1970s to be a forum for interdisciplinary communication among environmental scientists – biologists, chemists, toxicologists – as well as managers and engineers and others interested in environmental issues. SETAC was incorporated in Washington, DC, USA, in 1979 and soon grew to be a global entity.</p>
<p>SETAC is concerned about global environmental issues and is committed to <a href="https://www.setac.org/?page=Mission"><strong>Environmental Quality Through Science®</strong></a>. SETAC takes a multidisciplinary, multistakeholder and science-based approach to identifying solutions for environmental challenges. Because of its approach, SETAC’s development and the growth of the environmental movement are closely associated.</p>
<p>SETAC’s growth from SETAC North America has been marked by the establishment of Geographic Units around the world: SETAC Europe in 1989, SETAC Asia-Pacific in 1997, SETAC Latin America in 1999 and SETAC Africa in 2012, as well as regional chapters and branches at the more local level. </p>
<p>A unique strength of SETAC is its commitment to balance the scientific interests of government, academia and business. The society&#39;s <a href="https://www.setac.org/?page=Mission"><strong>by-laws</strong></a> mandate equal representation from these three sectors for officers, World Council, Geographic Unit boards of directors and councils, and committee members and governance of activities. The proportion of members from each of the three sectors has remained nearly equal over the years.</p>
